JAMES THOMPSON Obituary

JAMES (JIM) MAURICE THOMPSON July 20, 1945 - February 10, 2024
Jim Thompson, age 78 years, of Nipigon, Ontario, passed away peacefully at the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital on Saturday, February 10, with family by his side.

Jim was born and raised in Nipigon, at the North Shore Lodge family home, by his parents Margaret (Peg) (Sime), and John (Jack) Thompson. Jim worked from an early age, helping at the Lodge, delivering groceries, and driving the taxi. In 1964 Jim married Paulette Choiselat, and together raised three children. Jim also worked at the plywood mill in Nipigon and drove for MTO before beginning his truck driving career hauling for Domtar. He put on a lot of miles and worked tirelessly as owner operator providing for his family. After many years, Jim retired the wrenches and returned to working for Nicholas Trucking where he continued working until a cancer diagnosis and treatments prevented him from continuing. Jim (Candyman) enjoyed trucking with his good friends and work family, James, Mutsy, Dean, and Rob; and teaching his co-pilot Ethan the ropes. When schedules allowed, the boys would take time for a coffee together, and on occasion discuss who made the top of the list.

Jim was a kind and caring man. He liked to tease and knew how to get your goat. Over the years Jim always enjoyed time fishing and camping with family and friends, trips to the coffee shop, and an occasional crib game. On weekends and evenings, you could sometimes catch Jim having a nap; tv remote in hand, and an old western on the tube - resting up for his next load, with Tika by his side.

Jim was predeceased by his wife Paulette in 2019, his mother Margaret (Peg), and father John (Jack) Thompson, mother-in-law Eva Choiselat, and father-in-law Charles Choiselat.

Jim is survived by his sons Tim Thompson (Kari McMahon), Cory (Connie) Thompson, daughter Shelly (Keith) Alanen, grandsons Devin Thompson (Daniella Iacobucci), Riley Thompson (Katie Johnson), Marcus Thompson, granddaughter Maya Thompson, and grandsons Austin (Kimberly) Almgren, and Conner Almgren (Alex Lauritzam).

Jim will be forever missed by sisters Maureen (Peter Wilcox) of Keswick, ON; Bonnie (Richard Morden) Nipigon, ON; Nancy (Danny Mignault) Nipigon, ON; Beverly (Neil McLennan) Tsawwassen, BC; brothers David Thompson of Picton, ON; Bernard (Suzanne) Thompson, Nipigon, ON; daughter-in-law Danielle Thompson, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Jim's family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and support staff of Nipigon District Memorial Hospital for the dedicated care and compassion given to Dad. Special thanks to Dad's friends and relatives for the calls, visits, trips to Nipigon, coffee shop outings, afternoon drives, and the home-made meals and goodies he so very much enjoyed.

According to Jim's wishes cremation has taken place.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Nipigon Curling Club, Saturday, March 9th from 1pm - 4pm.
