James Whately Obituary

Born in the Beaches of Toronto, James Clifton Ralph Whately (67) passed peacefully at home with his family by his side after an 18 month long battle with mesothelioma. He flew all over the world for more than 40 years as a helicopter pilot. He was an avid guitarist who loved music, handy man extraordinaire, and excellent story teller. Jim was a kind man who loved to talk to everyone, always speaking lovingly about his family. His wife Chris, children Allison (Shawn), Jessica (Matt), and Thomas (Shannon). His love for his granddaughters was immeasurable and his girls will miss him dearly (Lola, Adèle, Chaley, Avery, Stella, Rosie, Arlowe, and Tillie). Thank you to Dr. Chan and the amazing nurses on 1A. A special thank you to Dr. Kat Ward who showed so much compassion, care, and support. It was because of you that Jim came home and was able to fulfill his final wishes. We will be forever grateful. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a local charity of your choice. A celebration of life will be held this summer, as per Jim's wishes.

My sincere condolences to all Jim's family. I worked with Jim in Utapao Thailand for a number of years. Jim was always a gentleman and a friend, ensuring that all felt they were contributing to the team. On Sunday evenings we would resurrect our band, the Mamba's, where Jim would play lead guitar. Great memories that Jim and I reminisced about in the weeks before his passing. Fly high my friend.

My condolences for your immeasurable loss. Jim was a true Prince of a man and the ultimate professional aviator. I had the good fortune to fly with Jim in Thailand and was looking forward to him becoming my back to back here in the Caribbean. You could always count on Jim to have your back. Per Ardua ad Astra, Jim rest in peace.

Dear Chris, Allison, Jessica, Thomas and families,
We were sorry to hear of Jim's passing. Our sincerest condolences. We remember Jim as being a kind and considerate neighbour. We have photos of Jim giving Christine a ride on his motorcycle and years after we all left Peace River, Peter and Christine would occasionally reminisce about the helicopter ride they went on with Jim and Jessica. Peter also talked about the helicopter ride Jim took him on without the girls. A little more daring and exciting for Peter. Hold your treasured memories close. Sincerely, Betty and Peter

I met Jim when we both worked at BGM film labs in Toronto and he was always "flying" through the hallways as if in a plane. Seriously. My next encounter with him was years later, in Thunder Bay, when I phoned his office looking for a helicopter to do aerial photography for the Ministry of Tourism and I realised who I was talking to. Naturally, I hired him, and off we flew for a wonderful photo-op. He was a great guy with a wicked sense of humour and he was a great pilot, as well. My condolences to his family.
