JANICE ANDREWS Obituary

November 2, 1953 -June 29, 2023
Janice Rose Andrews, local Thunder Bay artist, beloved partner and devoted friend passed away on June 29, 2023. Janice (or Jan as we fondly knew her), was truly a Renaissance woman. Janice pursued her passion for art in all aspects of her life. She was a well-respected member of the arts community in Thunder Bay.

Janice always had a passion for art. One of Janice's first jobs was actually creating window displays at Chapples department store. However, in 1979 she changed her course and began an accomplished career with the Canadian Grain Commission. She was a pioneer in this male-dominated work-force. Her determination and work ethic earned her a position as a supervisor and eventually as a staff training coordinator who travelled the world to train and share her vast knowledge with others. She said upon retiring in 2009 that this was one of her greatest joys. After retiring from her 30-year career with the Canadian Grain Commission Janice was finally able to focus full time on her passion, abstract art.

Janice graduated from Lakehead University in 2010 with an Honors Bachelor Fine Arts Degree, First Class Standing. She showcased her art locally and internationally. Her paintings were based on landscapes, impressions of what she saw, experienced and remembered. She was attracted to vibrant colors and was able to portray this on canvas as an emotional, spiritual and physical journey. Janice was proud of a particular series of paintings that were inspired by a family of crows that visited in her backyard; she captured them on canvas and film. She said that what inspired her most about them was their ability to live in the present and their truly exuberant nature.

Janice was a gentle, generous, unceasingly curious and patient person. Janice lived her life in the moment, but it is her strength, her joy and her sense of humor that we will miss the most.

Janice is survived by her partner David Lysack and his son Ryan. David and Janice spent over three decades together and were utterly devoted to each other David supported her artistic endeavors and Janice was by his side when it came to things that he loves, golf, fishing, curling, and of course their shared love of cooking and travel.

She was predeceased by her parents Corinne and Walter Andrews and her grandmother Mary Fedell.

She was also predeceased by her Uncle Guy Fedell, Uncle Moe and Aunt Monika Irving and Mike Pytych.

To my cousin I didn't know. I wish I had known you. We moved to California when I was 8. You and your mom and dad visited us in California in the sixties. You were going to stay in California but you went back. Who knows what might have happened if you had stayed.

It is with a very heavy heart to have to say goodbye to Janice, but I smile to know her spirit will remain alive in both my mind and moreover in her beautiful artwork. Her artwork engages you with her uplifting sense of colour, movement taking you into a journey into the spirit of her mind. Her vibrant and gentle soul remains imprinted in my mind and I will always cherish the time I knew her.

I´m so sorry to hear about the recent tragedies that you are enduring Dave. Jan and you have always been there for others and life is never fair in deciding who stays and goes. I went through a similar tragedy with my sister. Eventually the fond memories become far more common than the thoughts of "why".
Jan was a terrific lady and I know you have a million memories of the good times during the life you spent together.
Take care Dave, my thoughts are with you.

My condolences to Dave and the family. I had nothing but good memories and respect for all that Janice did, I'm the Grain Inspector I am today largely because of the mentoring and guidance from Janice and always enjoyed and appreciate having her as a coworker over the years.

Dave my deepest sympathy and condolences, please feel the love from afar. My heart is heavy Jan. Sharing this picture reminds me of so many stories throughout the years. This picture taken by your Dad, at Andrews Photography over 55 years ago. The art and spirit of your Dad lived on in your work. I wish I could have been there to give you a hug, share stories and let you know how much I love you. You were an extraordinary person, who embodied strength, resilience and a passionate spirit which had so much creativity and was always shining.
I wanted to share what you as a cousin meant:
C: connection, creative, courageous and calming
Connection as a cousin, creative in your art and thoughts, courageous to face all things, and also had a calming influence on others
O: outstanding,
Your work, painting charcoal or water colors your pictures were always so inspiring
U: unconditional, unique
The love of cousins is unconditional we are family, and you were one of a kind, unique in thoughts and love of life
S: special, sensitive, sharing
Special as a person, sensitive to people and feelings, sharing memories with friends and family often through your art
I: intelligent, inspiration, influence. individual
We know this one for sure, you were the most intelligent of all the cousins, inspirational by showing us you can go after your dreams and achieve them, influential in showing everyone there are always 2 sides to look on any issue and we are all different unique individuals
N: Nurture, natural, nature
Nurturing as cousins. You always provided a nurturing presence in life, natural as we look at foods, people who are real, unchanged to comply to worldly norms and simply the pure love of nature
Jan thank you for everything you have done for me throughout my life. As I look back on my life, I remember some things so small when we were younger but the impact it had on my life is enormous. I will love you Janice Rose Andrews forever
