JERRY DELLA MATTIA Obituary

JERRY DELLA MATTIA
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald Norman Della Mattia on April 21, 2025, two days before his 94th Birthday. Born in Toronto on April 23, 1931, he later moved to Fort William, working alongside his father at T. Zanette Ltd as he learned the tile, terrazzo and marble trade. After working there for 33 years he then worked for the City of Thunder Bay in the Parks and Rec Department until his retirement. One of his favorite pastimes was hunting with his kids. He also enjoyed playing cribbage as well as a yearly boxing day hockey game with his buddies. He met Lillian Bordeniuk at the YMCA where they were both members of a tumbling group called The Dominos. They later married on November 21, 1953. Jerry was an active member of St. Elizabeth's Church. He is survived by his wife, Lillian; children: Judy (Claudio) Caratti, Fred (Joanne), Joe (Jamie), and Karen; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Rico and Ida Della Mattia; and his sister, brother-in-law and nephew (Angie, Joe and Louis Buset). As per Jerry's wishes, a private interment will take place at a later date.

To know him was to love him. Rest in Peace.

Sending Lillian and the family our deepest condolences. I was so happy to see you both of you in church on Palm Sunday. We talked about the golden years and you both laughed. May Jerry rest now in the arms of his creator.

One of the sweetest man I ever met. I worked for zellers and when he and his wife were in the store they always stopped to chat. Their bright smiles and our little chats always brightened my day. May he fly on gentle angel wings Goodbye friend

I was very sad to hear of Jerry's passing and offer my sincere condolences. I had just seen him shopping at Walmart and as usual was greeted with a big smile. Originally I knew him only as Judy and Fred's dad but later I came to know him as an incredibly skilled workman in the Parks Division. If there was any kind of masonry or concrete related repair work to be done Jerry was the guy who could do it right and make it to last. He learned his trade well. Most importantly, he had a great attitude that showed in his work, family and his love of life. He will be missed but not forgotten.
