It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Jerry Stitt announce his passing on July 23, 2018 … his 90th birthday.
Much loved father of Carole, (Don Carmichael) Mark, Mike, and Rob. Very special and adored Grampa of Emilee and Meilin. He was predeceased by his sweet Lorraine in 2016.
Jerry was a man of action who was constantly learning and engaging in the world around him and these qualities stayed with him right up to the end. In spite of the challenges that he faced in his last years, he was determined to be part of the world and not watch from the sidelines. His love of tennis, jogging, rowing, skiing, golf, music, card games, and his participation in many community organizations throughout his life was eclipsed only by his joy in the collection of many good friends that he made and kept along the way. He enjoyed many years at Loon Lake and was happiest when the camp was full of friends and family enjoying yet another wonderful meal from Mom's kitchen.
Dad was one in a million and the quote by Maya Angelou that was sent to us by one of his support workers best sums up how he continued to influence people even as his illness progressed “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better”.
As Dad requested there will be no funeral. A private internment of his ashes will be held at a later date.
A great game of tennis or a long row across the lake followed by a large glass of good wine would be a wonderful way to celebrate and remember the lives of Lorraine and Jerry.
We would like to thank the staff at Chartwell Isabella in Thunder Bay and Del Manor Elgin Mills in Richmond Hill for their kind and compassionate support of Dad.
If people so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Association or the ThunderBay Regional Cancer Center are respectfully requested.

I was curious and sorry to see Dr Stitts passing. He was my dentist in the 1970´s. That was a long walk up those stairs in the Chappel Building!

Jerry exhibited what we can only hope is the best in us. He was a man who lived well, laughed often, loved much, and remained modest about his many accomplishments. In doing so, he gained the respect of intelligent people and the love of children. He appreciated earth's beauty and never failed to express it. Most importantly, however, he looked for the best in others and always gave the best he had.
I will miss you dearly.

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Jerry Stitt while he lived at Isabella Chartwell.
So please accept my sincere sympathy to all the Stitt family. Jerry had a sense of humor that one would soon be aware of.He sat beside me for meals and would chide the servers for some small error. "You are going to lose points for that" he would say with a broad smile.
Sincerely Ken Johnson.

Dear family of Jerry ~ my thoughts and prayers are with you all. I wish to share a cherished memory of your Father ~ many years ago he learned I would be skiing in Vail, and he asked me to please ski *Look Ma* for him. I got to the top and my skis went straight off the hill into mid air, and I hesitated ~ but promising Jerry I would ski it for him, I took a deep breath and ran the exhibition mogul run just for him -- I have the pin in reminder of that run, and would gladly pass it to you. He was larger than life and will be missed! Colleen Stadey

Jerry lived on Vickers Street when I was a child. He was instrumental in my first job--babysitting for the wonderful Helper family. Your grandfather Sam and my Dad Jimmy Lacey were good friends. Jerry's trumpet practices were a source of amusement for the neighbourhood as he left his window open. His dental skills for our family and a multitude of others were very much better. He was a great mentor for the neighbourhood kids who were learning tennis at the McKellar Hospital tennis court always happily helping. A true gentleman. He will be missed. My deepest sympathy to all his family and friends. Mimi Ventrudo

Carole, Mark, Mike, Rob,
Your parents were wonderful neighbours. Over the years we met them in airports, at local gatherings and more recently your dad at celebrations of life and alike they were always warm, interesting and interested. Will enjoy a paddle and a claret of wine in their honour.
Best, Tom and Margo Remus Joseph
