It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Hanchar who left us peacefully at the age of eighty eight on September 10th, 2025. Joan was born on October 5th,1936 to parents Martin and Nikka Jorgenson. She was 1 of 7 siblings, in a close family, which included sister Ellen, brothers, Magnus, Norris, Arnold, Alvin, and Kenny.
At the age of 16, Joan met the love of her life, her soulmate, Richard Hanchar for the first time at a dance in Current River. Their first dance set their fate. They were soon married and had three children, Linda, Terry, and Barbara. Joan was a devoted mother and grandmother to Darren and Laura, Lana and Terry, Travis and Jojo and Curtis, and a proud great-grandmother to Ryder, Atlas, Lucas, Noah, Mya, Hutson and Emma.
Joan was blessed with many cherished and life-long friends, from her 'knitting circle' friends, to her co-workers at the TD bank, to her many good neighbours in Westfort, where her and Rick raised their family.
Everyone who knows Joan knows that country music was the soundtrack of her life. Play her some country music and you have a friend for life.
Another passion of Joan's was knitting. Besides each of us getting our own afghans, Joan would spend many years knitting baby hats for the neonatal unit at the hospital.
Her life was a reminder of how joy can be found in the simple things, like family gatherings, laughter, two-stepping to country music or the comfort of one of her warm hugs that only she could give. Her kind spirit will live on in the memories of the countless moments she shared with family and friends.
Joan is predeceased by her husband Richard, parents Nikka and Martin Jorgenson, sister Elen, brothers Magnus, Norris, Arnold, Alvin, Kenny, her daughter-in-law Cheryl, and niece Kelly.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 4th, 1-4pm, at the Superior Inn.
