It is with extreme sadness, but also with thanksgiving for a life well lived, that the family of Mrs. Joan Walker announces her passing at the age of 101 on Friday, March 13, 2026 with her loving family by her side. Joan was born in Toronto on October 7, 1924 and relocated to Thunder Bay in 1949.
Home, family and faith were the most important aspects of Joan's life. She was very involved in all aspects of her families' lives. She was known and respected as "Grandma Walker" to all. Over the years, she enjoyed and encouraged her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren to live their lives to the fullest. As she would often say, "only the good die young". For over 40 years, she spent her weekends and summers at her favourite place on the lake, Amethyst Harbour. Here she developed many lifelong friendships and cherished her memories.
Joan was a member of St. Thomas Anglican Church for over 75 years. During those years she was actively involved in the Altar Guild holding the positions of President and Secretary and was also an active member of the ACW. As a member of the Lake Superior chapter IODE, Joan volunteered at the Thrift store run by the chapter and spent countless hours as the convenor of the annual book sale. She also served in the role of President of the Chapter. For many years Joan volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Westmount Hospital Tuck shop and delivered flowers at McKellar Hospital.
Joan was fortunate to spend 7 years living at Chartwell Residence on Arundel, where she enjoyed all the activities that were offered - especially Bingo and music. Her favourite song was Dark Town Strutters Ball which she asked every group to play. The family would like to thank the Chartwell Staff for the care and compassion shown to Joan during her time at Chartwell. We would also like to express our sincere thanks to her Paramed caregivers Barb and Susan who went above and beyond in their care of Joan and enabled her to stay and enjoy Chartwell as long as she did.
We would also like to thank the Southbridge Roseview staff for their exceptional care of Joan over the last year and half, and especially for making her as comfortable as possible over her last few days with us.
The family would also like to express their appreciation to Dr. Kelly Magee-Adams for her compassionate care of Joan over many years.
Joan will be sadly missed by her daughters Gail Jorgenson and Barb (Bruce) Murray; her granddaughters Jana (Neil) Coats, Carole Murray, and Jodie Maunula-Murray; her great grandchildren Cameron, Maddy, Celtie (Yosef), Makensie (Oscar), Lucas, Logan and Lachlan.
Joan is predeceased by her first husband John Welk, second husband Jim (JT) Walker, her mother Mavis Mulhall, her son Jamie Walker, her grandson Todd Murray and son-in-law Barry Jorgenson.
In accordance with Joan's wishes cremation has taken place and a celebration of life for family and friends will be held on Saturday, March 28 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Thomas Anglican Church with Reverend Jonathan Blanchard officiating.
If so desired, in lieu of flowers donations to St. Thomas Anglican Church Family Giving Centre or the
Charity of Your Choice would be greatly appreciated.
Those who love us never really leave us.
