JOÃO CERQUEIRA December 13, 1936 - January 1, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of João Cerqueira on January 1, 2025. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
Born and raised in Selim, Portugal, João was the middle child of five, born to Laura and Gaspar Cerqueira. In his youth, he helped tend the family's fields, contributing to the hard work that sustained their life. At the age of 20, João was called to serve in the Portuguese army. Upon completing his military service, he returned home and resumed working alongside his family.
In 1963, João immigrated to Canada to build a better life for himself and his family. He worked briefly in Toronto before relocating to Jellicoe, where he joined his two brothers working in the forestry industry. In 1974, João was joined by his wife, Maria, and their three children - Gaspar, Tina, and José where they spent the next 20 years raising their family. After retiring, João and Maria returned to Portugal to reconnect with the family they had left behind, enjoy the warm climate, the local cuisine, and settle into their dream home. A few years later, eager to be closer to their expanding family, they returned to Canada and made Thunder Bay their home.
João will be sadly missed by his wife Maria; son Gaspar (Carolle); daughter Laurentina (Daniel); son José (Monika); sister Angelina (José Maria); brother Antonio; grandchildren Stephan (Kristi Ann), Kayla (Ryan), Kiarra (Joseph), Noah, Tianna, Maya and Alexander as well as many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
João was predeceased by his two brothers, José and Manuel Cerqueira; many sisters and brothers-in-law, nephews and nieces.
Though João is no longer with us, his love and spirit will continue to live on in our hearts forever.
Funeral services for João will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 in the chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 Cumberland Street North, presided by Reverend Michael Mahoney at 11:00 am. Visitation for family and friends will begin one hour prior. Interment will follow the reception in St. Andrew's Cemetery
