Mr. Johan Antonius “John” Pothof, 81 years, of Nipigon, Ontario, passed away peacefully, with family by his side, on Thursday, December 23, 2021 at St. Joseph's Hospice in Thunder Bay, Ontario. John served as a leader for the Cubs and Boy Scouts, was president of the Nipigon Hockey League, served as a Councillor for the Township of Nipigon, was on the Library Board, the Board of Directors for the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital and for TOPS. John was a TV repair man for many years and was an electrical engineering technician for Bell Canada. He also volunteered for many community events during the fifty years he was in Nipigon. John enjoyed camping, kayaking and building kayaks, cycling, weight lifting, sketching and photography, making a variety of home-made soups and his newest endeavor was his HAM radio with Morse Code. John was is predeceased by his wife Anne (2018), and by his parents Cora and Franciscus Pothof. He is survived by his daughter Laurie (Brad) Kroker of Thunder Bay, his son John Pothof (Debbie) of Moosejaw, Saskatchewan, by grandchildren – Chris Kroker (Deanne), Miranda Kroker (Rylan), by great grandchildren – Scarlett and Jack Kroker, by siblings – Mary Van Oorchot of Brampton, Ontario, Janet Shadoff of Mississauga, Ontario and Edward (Denise) Pothof of Bolton, Ontario. According to John's wishes cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at 11 A.M. at St. Mary's Church, Nipigon with Kathleen Aitken officiating. Arrangements are in the care of Elliott Funeral Home Ltd., Nipigon.
