John Bird Obituary

JOHN GORDON BIRD
In profound sadness, the family of John Gordon Bird, a resident of Thunder Bay, wish to announce his passing at home on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at the age of 81 after a complicated illness. He is survived by his wife Sandy of 53 years, son Andrew (wife Ann Stockford, daughters Kaitlyn & Ellaina) living in Ottawa, and daughter Cindy (husband Anthony Bergamo, daughters Samantha & Sophie) in Thunder Bay; his brother George Bird and sister-in-law, Grace Bird, of West Vancouver, and their children and families; sisters-in-law Myrna Leblanc (Richard), Wilma Timko (Ken), and Leah Salini (Joseph) and their families. John is predeceased by his parents Alice and Gordon Bird, mother-in-law Beatrice Lysnes (William), and several additional relatives. Professionally, the largest portion of John's career was spent in education as a teacher, vice-principal, and principal, along with several special assignments at the Board Office. Post-retirement, he worked for Elections Canada as an Assistant Returning Officer for several federal elections. He also served on the Board of Directors for the St. Joseph Foundation. Most importantly, in line with his passion for music, John served as the Senior Choir Director at Corpus Christi Church for 25 years. His spare time was filled with a variety of interests including singing with the Fort William Male Choir, playing trumpet with the jazz band, “Bottom of the Barrel,” golfing, sailing, and curling. Above all, family was his happy place, especially being known as “Buppa” to his four granddaughters! The funeral mass will be celebrated at Corpus Christi Church on Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at 10:30am with a reception at the Sargent Family Reception Centre immediately following. Visitation will be the day prior on Tuesday, October 18th at Sargent and Son Funeral Chapel from 5:00pm to 7:00pm with prayers at 7:00 pm. Both the Prayers and Mass will be live-streamed on the Sargent and Son Facebook page <https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057657782479>. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the St. Joseph Foundation at sjftb.net

My heartfelt condolences to the family. I loved singing with the Corpus choir with John conducting. He was such a perfectionist and had us practicing until we got it right. I am sure he is heaven conducting the choir of angels. RIP John

Dear Sandy and Family,
Our deepest condolences in the loss of John. We of course first met John through Ernie´s early involvement with the Fort William Male Choir. And then, our paths crossed again, when Ernie and I worked at Elections Canada with John.
John was always the consummate gentleman and devoted to whatever task he undertook.
We hope that your many happy memories will comfort you in your grief.
Sincerely,
Jackie and Ernie

My condolences to the family of Mr. Bird. He was my music teacher at St. Ignatius (the old one). We always thought how awesome it was to have a Bird for a music teacher. He was one of the best teachers I had.

Remembering John on this day and the many curling matches we had with the Loose Ends group. I was always impressed how he would drive out the hack and glide all the way down to the far house, while the rest of us would rarely get to out of our house. Fond memories of a man who lived a full and remarkable life.
