JOHN CORNELL Obituary

CORNELL November 3, 1941 - February 17, 1941
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, John Winston Cornell, age 84 years. He passed away at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, after a lengthy illness.

Winston was born in Port Arthur on November 3, 1941, and was a proud member of Fort William First Nation. He was educated locally and had a long career with the City of Thunder Bay Parks Department. He met Carol Bannon, and they were married on August 19, 1960, building a wonderful life and family together. He loved animals, especially dogs and cats. He enjoyed playing Bingo, watching baseball, and taking in every hockey game he could, no matter what league. He was a big Toronto Maple Leafs fan and was excited to attend a few games with his wife and children. In his younger days, Winston was a talented carver, and some of his totem poles can still be found in the area. Winston loved gardening, and together he and Carol grew some beautiful flower gardens and hardy, tasty vegetables. His Catholic Faith was important to him, and he attended St. Agnes and St. Anne's Parishes over the years.

Above all else, family was Winston's true passion. He worked hard to ensure his family was always taken care of and took pride in everything he did there was no cutting corners. He was proud of each and every one of his children and grandchildren and was a devoted and loyal husband to Carol. He was kind-hearted and a gentle soul. He was a quiet man who never complained but was fiercely protective of those he loved. He was a true friend to many and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. The many memories we are left with will forever remain in our hearts.

Winston is survived by his beloved wife, Carol; children Joyce Pelletier (Marvin), Sandra Cornell-McLaren (Farley), Darryl Cornell and John Cornell; grandchildren Jay (Jenna), Brandon (Brooke), Robin (Lenn), Brittany, Samantha, Andrea (Nick), Kylie, Johnny, Joshua, Georjann; great-grandchildren Parker, Logan, Noah, Felix, Nikolai, Animkii, Natalie-Jean, Lenni, Lennox, Khloe, Wyatt, Cameron, Caleb, Levi, Maddie, Isabella, Antonio, Isaiah, Elijah, and Gabriel. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and cousins.

He was predeceased by his mother, Charlotte Cornell; his grandson, Robert Cornell; his granddaughter, Jennifer Cornell; his special great-granddaughter, Caleigh; and extended family members.

Funeral Services for Winston Cornell will be held on Monday, February 23, 2026, with family and friends gathering in St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church for the Funeral Mass at 2:00 pm, celebrated by Father Biju Mathew and concelebrated by Father James Panikulam. Interment will follow at the FWFN Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Visitation will be held in the Church on Sunday evening from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, with Vigil Prayers offered at 7:00 pm.

Should friends so desire, donations made in Winston's name to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada and/or the Canadian Kidney Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
