July 29, 1938 ~ January 15, 2026
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Mirek Jonas, age 87 years, peacefully surrounded by his family in Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on Thursday, January 15, 2026.
John was born in Perdubice, Czechoslovakia on July 29, 1938 to Voito and Frances (nee Bohackova) Jonas and immigrated to Canada in 1951. He met Margaret June Poster and they were married on February 17, 1969, spending 38 years building a wonderful life and family together, until her passing in 2007. John worked as a Salesman for Westinghouse, and then at Powell Equipment, the local Caterpillar Dealer, where he was a Welder until retirement.
John was an outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a huge animal lover, often feeding and spoiling anything that ventured into his yard. John also has a passion for his hobby farm, plowing the fields and growing his crops. Family was important to him, and time spent together brought him the greatest joy. John will be deeply missed by all, but we are comforted knowing he is once again with his true love, our Mom.
John is survived by his children, Mike Dill, Heather (Don) Huntley and Jason Jonas (Lisa); grandchildren Hailey, Lisa, Nick, Kate, Tianna and Corissa; five great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and extended relatives.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Margaret and his parents, Voito and Frances Jonas.
A Celebration of John's Life will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026 with a Come and Go Reception and Viewing from 12:00pm until 2:00pm in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens, where John will be laid to rest beside Margaret.
Should friends so desire, donations made in John's memory to the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society would be greatly appreciated.
