JOHN MCKAY Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather John McKay in his 83rd year surrounded by the love and strength of his family. John was born July 22nd, 1940 at Port Arthur General to parents Pearl and John McKay. He started his elementary education at St. Stan's then onto St. Patrick's High School. On July 1st, 1958 John had met the love of his life Aurora just after his car accident close to her house. As it turned out, it was an accident never to be forgotten. After Aurora and her father tended to John's injuries, John asked her father's permission to date her and from that point forward they would care for each other for the next 64 years. Once married, they began raising their family of 4 children and 5 grandchildren who were the focus of his life and of whom he was so proud. In 1998 John retired from Manitoba Pool Elevators where he'd been employed since 1970. During that period he had made numerous close friendships. During the early seventies John continued his education at Lakehead University where he achieved his Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and Psychology all while working full time and raising his family. Attaining a university degree was an accomplishment that gave him a lot of satisfaction and modelled for his children the importance of getting an education or becoming skilled at a trade. In his younger years, John was giving of his time. He was an umpire for Little League Baseball and also coached his sons in Minor League Hockey for 11 years which gave him great happiness. John was also an avid pool player and a very good one (as he would tell us). He looked forward to his Thursday nights at the Elks Hall to compete and banter with the guys. Other sources of joy for John were watching his grandkids at their dance recitals, hockey games, Special Olympics, taking them out for snacks and teaching his grandsons how to shoot pool. Travelling to Caribbean hotspots, cosmopolitan cities and hockey tournaments with his family members were also some of his favourite memories throughout his life. John is predeceased by his mother Pearl, father John, mother-in-law Maria Falvo, father-in-law Felice Falvo, brother-in-law Marcello Falvo, and sister-in-law Fern Favot. John will forever be remembered by his loving and devoted wife and dance partner Aurora, daughters Lynn (Bill Chambers), Leslie (Chris Hynnes), sons John (Deb) and Richard (Carol), grandchildren Matthew and Richard (Dominique Chenard) Chambers, Zoe, Piper and Camden Hynnes, sister Peggy (Doug) Klages, brother-in-law Leonard Favot, brother-in-law whom he loved like his own little brother Ronnie (Vicky) Falvo and numerous nieces and nephews of the McKay and Falvo families. John's family would like to extend their utmost gratitude to Dr. Boeke and the caring nurses and staff of the ICU, 1A and 2A of TBRHSC. Your empathy and care have helped us tremendously through our loved one's final journey. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army or a Charity of Your Choice. Family and friends will gather for a funeral Mass on Monday, November 20th at 11:00 am with visitation one hour prior at St. Dominic's Church on Redwood Ave. celebrated by Rev. Michael Mahoney.
