John McMahon Obituary

September 5, 1940 – March 29, 2022

Mr. John (Jack) Roy McMahon, age 81 years, passed away peacefully in Toronto General Hospital on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 with his family by his side.

Jack was born on September 5th, 1940 in Cobourg, Ontario. He moved to Fort William in 1963 to work as a draughtsman, after completing his studies at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Architectural Technology. He quickly left the office to become a teacher, beginning at Sir Winston Churchill and retiring from Westgate C.V.I. in 1998, after 30 years of teaching.

Jack will be fondly remembered for his quick wit, green thumb and quiet pride that he had in his family and their accomplishments. His love of sport had him coaching numerous teams over the years, namely men and women's basketball, which he continued even after retirement. The positive impact that Jack had on the numerous students that he taught and players he coached over the years cannot be overstated.

An avid gardener, Jack would spend the warmer months outside, tending to and cultivating his variety of crops and plants. A later hobby was to bend corn to his will by designing the annual Amazing Corn Mazes at Belluz Farms.

His love of sport and gardening could only be surpassed by his love of family and friends. He always looked forward to meetings with the Wine Group and their families, revelling in their company and laughter. Jack's favourite moments were occasions that brought his children and grandchildren together, so holidays were treasured times.

Jack is survived by his wife of 54 years, Diane (nee Zadorozny), daughter, Jodi (Kevin) Belluz, son, Ryan (Genevieve) McMahon, and brother Robert McMahon. He will be dearly missed by his darlin' grandchildren Lily and Findley Belluz, and Imogen and Gwyneth McMahon, and by Teegan (Trochimchuk) Williamson and Ember (Trochimchuk) Schincariol, the beloved daughters of his best friends Dave & Arlene Trochimchuk. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

He was predeceased by his parents Roy and Irene (nee Hudson) McMahon, sisters, Winnifred and Patricia McMahon.

A private, invitation only Celebration of Life is scheduled on April 14th. Cremation has taken place. The interment of his ashes will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. No date is set.

Should friends so desire, donations made in his memory to Our Hearts at Home Cardiovascular Campaign or the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society would be greatly appreciated.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Westfort Chapel, 420 West Gore Street at James.

I am very sorry to hear of Jack's passing. He was both my teacher and basketball coach at Westgate High School. Jack's passion, patience, and sense of fun made playing basketball the highlight of my time in school. I am so grateful for his time and dedication to fostering not only skill development, but more importantly, to creating a sense of belonging and amazing friendships among my teammates. Thank you Jack. Sending lots of love to Diane, Jodi, Ryan and their families. XOXO

I'm sorry I was unable to make the celebration of life, but my deepest sympathies are sent out to Jack's family. He was a kind man whom I'm glad to have known. His loss will be felt by many, I'm sure, as he would have been fondly remembered by everyone he met.

We just wanted to say how sorry we were to hear of Jack's passing! We were privileged to have had him do such a wonderful job with our Da Vinci bocce club in organizing and scheduling our games (a job that requires so much work and nobody wants)! He took the time to really listen to people and try to solve all of their problems. Our condolences to you Diane and your family. Sincerely Italo (Rocky) and Sharon

I was fortunate to have Jack as my basketball coach for 3 years in high school. We won the city championship in 2 of those years. He was a tremendous leader and created an atmosphere of fun and teamwork. I have had the utmost respect for him my entire life. My sincerest condolences to Diane and all his family.

The world lost a beautiful soul in Jack MacMahon. A "gentle" man and a gentleman, he always made the people he was with feel important and cared for. Though we cannot join you at this time, we want you to know that you are all very present in our thoughts and prayers. Later this month, we are planning our own celebration of Jack's life in which all the cousins in the Toronto area plan to join. May God bless you and your family.
