Deacon John Joseph Myers, born April 13, 1949, in Chatham, Ontario, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, after a brief battle with cancer.
John lived a very full and varied life. He married his loving wife, Susan Myers (née Hogan), on October 16, 1971, and together they built a life grounded in faith, family, and service. Beginning his career as a mechanic, John's strong work ethic and skill led him through many roles within the automotive industry, including mechanic, service writer, body shop manager, and eventually business owner as an independent automotive appraiser.
Yet John's world extended far beyond his profession. He was a gifted musician, earning Canadian Country Music Award nominations with the band Stoneridge, performing with multiple children's bands, and most recently playing in a bluegrass band. He also shared his talents on stage with Magnus Theatre, including touring with the production A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline, and brought laughter to many through his work with a local improv comedy group.
John's faith was always at the forefront of his life. He was ordained as a Deacon in 2008 and served faithfully at St. Patrick's Cathedral, as well as other churches in and around the community. His diaconate included music ministry, prayer groups, and pastoral care, where he offered compassion, guidance, and steady support to those in need.
Perhaps the most remarkable part of John's life was the way he made people feel cared for, trusted, and truly heard. He brought light wherever he went. His kindness and generous heart touched everyone fortunate enough to cross his path. He had a gift for making each person feel special, supported, and valued. This was especially true within his family, who knew that his love and encouragement were always just a phone call or text away.
John is survived by his loving wife of 55 years this October, Susan; his children, Doug (Laura) and Rebecca; his grandchildren, Barry, Liam, Zachary, Koen, and Kamryn as well as his great grandson Ryder. He is also survived by his sisters, Diana (Paul) and Susan (Keith); his brothers, Chris and Glen (Diane); in-laws Barry and Sylvia Hogan, Ross and Bev Hogan, Peggy Spyrka, Sandra Nuutinen, Judy Willder and many extended family members and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Jean (McIntosh) and Joseph Myers and sister Bonnie Jean; mother and father in law Ralph and Dorothea Hogan, brother-in-laws Norman Hogan (Mryna), Doug Hogan, Peter Spyrka, Joe Willder, nephews David Nuutinen, Peter Spyrka, Randy Myers and niece Diane Hogan.
His legacy of faith, music, laughter, and love will live on in all who knew him.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Agnes Church, with a Celebration of Life to follow at the Da Vinci in the Michelangelo room from 3 to 6. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the
Canadian Cancer Society.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
"Well done, good and faithful servant."
