Joe, we had the privilege of being in his care for 41 years. We met in Emerg at McKellar when he and Trudy were just getting started and we clicked because he was all about preventative medicine, as a matter of fact he once prescribed me a book, and because of it I´m the only member of my family that doesn´t have diabetes. He wasn´t a pill pusher, and in the early days he was so helpful with family counselling. We would laugh about one of his metaphors "Who´s driving the bus?" whenever we discovered ourselves caught up in a boundary situation. It was amusing to follow him around from one clinic site to the next. He mostly always had nurse practitioners, and always strived for improving health care. He went to bat for me and took on the insurance company with all the rigamarole that includes. I once asked him why he wore so much cologne and he said people stink, well that got me thinking about his many responsibilities. I heard more about government regulations than I really cared to. Joe always shared his struggles and joys (guitar with kids, hockey, lake, dogs); we had many laughs and the obituary captures what a special guy you were lucky to live with. I´m a healthier and happier person because of Joe.
