JOSEPH MUTZ Obituary

JOSEPH (JOE) MUTZ September 24th, 1933 ~ November 25th, 2025
We are saddened to announce the peaceful, yet sudden, passing of Joe on Tuesday, November 25th, 2025, at the age of 92.

Joe was born near Tuffnell, Saskatchewan on September 24th, 1933, and as a young man, made his way east to Winnipeg working for CP Rail. He soon learned of better job opportunities in Fort William and again headed east. He worked for CP Rail and then operated a Royal Esso service station in Fort William in the 1950s/1960s. He then owned and operated Paradise Motel, and when that business was sold, he returned to work at CP Rail, culminating in his favourite role: conductor on the passenger train between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg. A true people person, he thoroughly enjoyed showing passengers from all over the world the beauty of train travel. He stayed on with CP Rail after passenger train service was discontinued but always lobbied various politicians to bring it back.

Retirement included volunteering for a myriad of church (especially at Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Church), and community organizations (most notably Meals on Wheels into his late 80s), and he also regularly travelled back out west with stops in Kenora, and Winnipeg to catch up with friends. He was a long-time member of both the Knights of Columbus and St. George's Society. His positive attitude and genuine interest in other people endeared him to any and all who interacted with him. He liked nothing better than to sit on his lawn chair in the summer, while neighbours dropped in to chat and enjoy a sunny day.

Predeceased by his parents Peter and Helen, siblings Mary, Fred, James, William, and Stanley. Survived by his children Jeffrey, Randall, Barry, and Janice (Bobby), siblings Dennis, Daniel and Anne, and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.

We would like to extend our thanks to the first responders and staff at Chartwell Hilldale for their kindness and compassion.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place, and a service will be held in Spring 2026, with interment to take place in Saskatchewan. Arrangements entrusted to Blake Funeral Chapel.

Should friends so desire, donations in memory of Joe, to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation, Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation, or St. Andrew's Dew Drop Inn would be greatly appreciated.

Our sincere condolences to Joe´s family and friends. We were one of those neighbours that loved to stop by for a chat while he surveyed the land from his lawn chair. He always had a big smile and a hug and he was always happy to give our dogs a pat and tell us what he had been up to. He kept Riverdale Road clean of trash for years as he walked along with a garbage bag picking up after others. I hope the "Adopt a road" sign bearing his name remains there. Norkooli Road will miss him dearly.

Deep condolences to the family of Joseph Mutz on your loss. The Fort William area and C.P.R. have lost a noble "Conductor" and local rail historian. He was invaluable to me in my railway historical work unpacking stories of CPR rail operations running west, during our many recorded interviews. A model Ukrainian to have lived a noble long life. May he rest in Peace. Vichnaya Pamyat
