JOY HARTMAN October 7, 1941 ~ March 18, 2026
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Joy Annia Hartman (née Misener), age 84 years, peacefully in Hogarth Riverview Manor on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.
Joy was born in Hamilton, Ontario on October 7, 1941 to Robert and Annie (née Schaefer) Misener, and moved to Thunder Bay as a young child with her parents, brother Roy and sister Loy. She was educated locally and she joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on her 18th birthday in 1959 as a Meteorologist observer, until 1966 when she was Honorably Released as a Leading Aircraftwoman. Upon completion of her service, she went to Winnipeg and worked as a Meteorologist before returning to Thunder Bay in 1977 where she has resided since. Joy enjoyed knitting and was always up for a shopping trip.
Above all else, family was Joy's main focus. She was a single mom and worked hard to raise three children on her own, and was the definition of strength, dedication and determination. Time spent together with her kids and grandchildren always made her the happiest. Joy will be deeply missed by all, but we treasure the memories she has left us with.
Joy is survived by her daughter Shelley Bachynski (née Hartman) and son Ron Hartman; son-in-law Glen Bachynski; grandsons Jacob Thompson of Toronto, Brent (Karrilyn) and Derik Bachynski, Joseph and Jesse Smith, Nikko and Michael Hartman, and two great-grandsons Dean and Ethan Bachynski. She is also survived by her sister, Loy Etelapaa and nieces Maryann, Karen and Laura as well as extended family members.
She was predeceased by her daughter Sharla Thompson; her parents Robert and Annie Misener; her brother Roy Misener and brother-in-law Leo Etelapaa.
Joy's family would like to express their deepest appreciation to management and staff of Daisy - 3 South at Hogarth Riverview for their exceptional care of our mother over the years. Thank you also to the staff at Robins donuts for making sure she always had her morning coffee.
As per Joy's wishes, cremation has taken place and she will be released into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Nova Scotia. Should friends so desire, donations made in her memory to Epilepsy Canada or the Canadian Mental Health Association would be greatly appreciated.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James.
