JOYCE LAINE Obituary
(née Walneck
Joyce Laine (née Walneck), born in Ross, Manitoba on February 23, 1933, passed away August 23, 2025 in Ottawa, Ontario, peacefully surrounded by the love of her family.
The daughter of Joseph and Caroline Walneck, Joyce moved to Thunder Bay at 10 years of age, where she met her lifelong companion, Raymond Laine, at Cornwall School. What began as a childhood friendship blossomed into an extraordinary 82-year bond and 66 years of marriage.
Joyce was a dedicated scholar, graduating from Western University and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. She shared her love of learning as a high school Latin and French teacher and later in life as an ESL teacher in Toronto, Thunder Bay and Halifax, inspiring generations of students with her knowledge and passion for classical languages.
Faith was the cornerstone of Joyce's life. A woman of deep spirituality, she was actively involved in both the Anglican and Catholic churches, nurturing her community through prayer, service, and fellowship.
Together with Raymond, Joyce explored the world through extensive travels, yet always cherished the warmth of home with her immediate and extended family most of all. She was a devoted mother to Lisa (Stephan Ziegler) and Cassia, and a proud grandmother and great grandmother to Sarah (Pascal Kind), Ashley (Stephan Leuzinger), Chiara, Christian, Jack and Frederik. Her family was the joy of her life, and her love for them was boundless.
Joyce will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her devotion to family, and her grace and wisdom that touched all who knew her. She was predeceased by her parents and brother, Raymond Walneck.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. A memorial mass will take place at St Patrick's Fallowfield in Nepean on Tuesday, September 16th at 11 am. The mass will also be available for streaming.
