Joyce “Chic” McCabe passed away on Friday, June 24, 2016 in the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital, Nipigon, Ontario. Chic was born in East Angus, Quebec, moving to Red Rock, Ontario in 1945 with her family, the youngest daughter of Dorothy and Doug McCabe. She attended public and high school in Red Rock. She graduated from the Grand Rapids (Michigan) School of the Bible & Music in 1963, taught WCTU kids. She sang alto in the school trio. Chic was hired, upon graduating, as a supervisor in a Christian Youth Home for kids who were Wards of the Court in the same city. Later she was also a supervisor in a girl's dormitory & employed in the subscription dept. of a magazine in Grand Rapids. She spent many summers counselling at Dorion Bible Camp in Ontario. In Thunder Bay she went back to high school, then took a business course, commenced working as Secretary to the Recreation Director in Red Rock & then transferred to Domtar mill office in 1968. She was on Domtar's Employees' Assistance Program Committee; Chic was President of The Office & Professional Employees' International Union for 16 years, Secretary of the Mill Council of Unions, Secretary of Red Rock's Cuesta Camera Club, Secretary for Red Rock's Homecoming in 1995, a member of Red Rock's Historical Society in various positions, a member of the Red Rock Fish & Game Club, & a member of Red Rock's Economic Development Committee. She served on the Marina Committee, the Cruise Ship Committee, the Welcoming Committee and helped with the North Shore Golf's 50th Anniversary celebrations in 2011. Exceptionally proud of Red Rock, Chic was an amateur photographer, loved the bush & truly believed there is no greater, more beautiful, interesting country in the world than Canada, nor any better place to live than Northwestern Ontario. Her scenic slide show of N.W. Ontario set to music was used upon every opportunity to promote N.W. Ontario. In 1998 she found the love of her life, Buffy and doubled up on love when she bought another cocker, company for Buffy, Ebony. Chic appreciated her various awards: 2011 The Sandy Harbinson Award, 2012 Volunteer of the year and 2013 The Ambassador Award for her promotion of her home town, Red Rock and N.W. Ontario. She is predeceased by her parents, her sister Faye Gallant, sister-in-law Doris McCabe, Buffy and Ebony. She is survived by her brother David, sister Deanna (Bernie) Imhoff, brother-in-law Andre Gallant, a number of nieces and nephews and her cocker Lady whose new home is with Maureen Scott. The most important, influential facts in her life were the Bible, the incredible power of prayer & the Lord as Saviour. According to Chic's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at 11 A.M. at the Dorion Community Centre, Dorion Loop, off Highway 17, with Pastor M. Lord of the Dorion Bible Fellowship officiating. Friends so wishing may make donations to the Red Rock Historical Society or Dorion Bible Fellowship, Dorion, Ontario. Arrangements are in the care of Elliott Funeral Home Ltd., Nipigon, Ontario.

What an emotional trip home after being away for over 25 years. Losing my Aunt Chic brought me back home to more deeply appreciate my roots, my childhood, my family and my God. The Northern Shore is the most peaceful & beautiful place I've ever been to. I will miss my phone calls and letters from Chic. I will miss her encouraging poems and cards that happily arrived and poked out of my mailbox! She unknowingly taught me so many things about life and how to live. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend her memorial and for the cards and condolences. Gratefully, R. xoxox

So sorry to hear the news of Chic's passing. She & I attended the Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music together and she was a life-long friend of my brother, Monty Parks. We also had connections through Dorion Bible Camp. I always enjoyed Chic's good humour and her infectious laugh. I saw her last at my brother Monty's funeral in Thunder Bay. I will miss her.

We were very sorry to hear of Chic's passing. We have many long time memories of her. We knew of her poor health over the past years and now feel that peace has come. It was a pleasure to have known her.

I am honoured to have shared some of Chic's life's journey. She taught me to be present in all functions and to love all my choices. Chic, IO will miss you, but know you are always present.
