Katica "Kedy" Rusyn also known as "Babi", 'Teta" passed away peacefully at TBRHSC on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at age 97.
Kedy was the epitome of a strong, independent woman. She lived in her home up until a week before her passing with minimal help, an example of her determination and strength. Kedy was born on August 29, 1924 in Gospic, Lika Croatia. In search of a better future Kedy immigrated to Canada in 1951. She arrived in Halifax, NS via ship and travelled by train to Port Arthur to be with her father Toma Zdunic. In 1960 she married John Rusyn. They had two children, Paul and Borys.
Kedy worked in the bush camps as a cook and then as a Housekeeper with PAGH where she retired. Mom enjoyed gardening, knitting, cooking and Sunday family dinners. She kept a vegetable garden and planted flowers in her yard every year until recently due to health reasons. Mom loved to cook for her immediate, extended family and at social events. She was famous for her torte, cabbage rolls, perogies, and apple strudel, which were all made from scratch. Trying to make the apple strudel was impossible because no one could stretch the dough for the strudel without tearing it apart.
Her family had been her priority which took a whole new meaning with the addition of grandchildren. Her greatest joys were her grandchildren. She loved them enormously and would do anything for them. She was known as "Babi" to Jessyca and Thomas. She will be sadly missed by them. For everything you have done and the sacrifices that you've have made to make our lives better we are forever grateful.
Kedy is survived by her two sons Paul (Janice), and Borys (Daniella); grandchildren, Jessyca and Thomas Rusyn; Niece Tamara Callon (the Late Hon. Thomas Callon); Nephews Adrian (Sandra), and Thomas Torich. She is also survived by great nieces and nephews; Charlatta (Danny), Paul (Shanna), Shawn; Great Grand Nieces and Nephews; Cienna, Victtoria, Claudio, Anastasia and Paul Thomas (Jr).
She was predeceased by her parents Toma Zdunic and Antonija (nee Galac), brother Marko, and sister at birth; sister Dragicia Torich and brother-in-law Frank Torich; Uncle Joe and Stephen Galac; Aunt Kate Galac and her husband John Rusyn.
Special thank you to Faye also known as Mary to our mom for the extra help and care she provided on a regular basis. Mom could not have managed to be in her home for as long as she did without your help. To' her nephew Tom "Neno" who also helped our mom when needed. He would stop by to visit, chat, bring groceries, McDonald's coffee and look in on her to see how her day was going. Thank you.
Kedy was cremated according to her wishes. A Celebration of Life is planned and will take place on Friday, May 6, 2022. Interment will be at St. Andrew's Cemetery. A reminder announcement will be made in the Chronicle Journal near the date of celebration.
