It is with unimaginable heartbreak that the family announces the sudden and unexpected passing of Kelsey May McBain, age 30, on February 5, 2026. Her loss has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who loved her. Kelsey was born on March 2, 1995, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and grew up in Kakabeka Falls. She attended Kakabeka Falls Public School, Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate & Vocational Institute, and Confederation College, where she formed many lifelong friendships that she deeply treasured.
Kelsey shared a rare and unbreakable bond with her twin sister, Madison. Growing up side by side, they shared a connection that remained constant throughout their lives. Together with their older brother Matthew, their childhood was filled with countless adventures and memories. Even in adulthood, the three affectionately referred to themselves as "the McBain triplets."
Some of Kelsey's fondest childhood memories were summers spent camping with cousins at Arrow Lake, Madeline Lake, and Brown's Clearwater. She looked forward to continuing these traditions with her own children, sharing the joy of family adventures for years to come.
Kelsey's vibrant personality was evident from a young age. Her presence brought laughter wherever she went, and with her quick wit she always seemed to know just what to say. She was the light in every room she entered and often the life of the party. Kelsey loved planning and hosting events. Over the years she organized countless bridal showers, baby showers, and birthday celebrations, always going above and beyond to make them special. She was the kind of person who was always there when someone needed her, no matter the circumstance.
Kelsey found her greatest purpose and joy in motherhood. She was a deeply devoted and loving mother to her daughter Aspyn, who was truly the light of her life. Kelsey approached motherhood with great care and intention, always thoughtful about the choices she made for her children, and the life she was building for them. She had been eagerly awaiting the arrival of her son, Rhett, already filled with love for the little boy she could not wait to meet.
Kelsey purchased her first home independently in Thunder Bay before she and Bradley moved to Lappe to begin their family. She quickly settled into the welcoming, family-focused community, where she felt truly at home. Kelsey worked hard to make their house a home. She spent countless hours tending to her gardens and greenhouse, teaching Aspyn along the way. She dreamed of a home filled with fresh-cut flowers all summer long, lovingly picked from the gardens she tended with care.
She had a passion for helping others and pursued that calling through various roles in long-term care. Most recently, she worked at Matawa Health Cooperative, where she utilized her leadership skills in a friendly and rewarding environment. Through these careers, Kelsey made many lasting friendships that she held close to her heart.
Kelsey is survived by her cherished children, Aspyn and Rhett Maynard; her partner, Bradley Maynard; her parents, Lori and John McBain; her siblings, Matthew McBain and Madison (Brody) Miller; her grandmother, Lillian Uusitalo; her nephew, Callum; and nieces Avery and Kayce, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.
Kelsey was predeceased by her Nana, Margaret McBain; her Papa, John McBain; and her Grandpa, Eino Uusitalo.
Aspyn and Rhett brought a new kind of light into Kelsey's life. Kelsey, everyone here will keep that light on for you in our hearts, in your children, and in the countless memories you left behind. You will be loved always, and missed forever.
A celebration of Kelsey's life will be held early this summer where we can gather to share stories and truly celebrate the amazing person that she was.
We would like to thank the staff at Victoria Hospital and the Children's Hospital NICU in London, as well as the staff at the Ronald McDonald House, for their compassion and care.
