Kenneth Brown Obituary

1942–2020
Mac died on December 26, 2020, at Kingston General Hospital (KGH) at age 78. Born in Clawson Michigan, his family later moved to the outskirts of Lake Orion, Michigan, where they planted a tree farm. Mac was the eldest of seven Brown family children, and those years on the farm likely contributed to his calling as a Professor of Forestry, first at Purdue University in Indiana, and then for a 30-year career at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario before retiring to Kingston. Mac played a formative role in many Forestry students' lives, many of whom he stayed connected with for years. Mac is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shann, who he met during their time at graduate school at Purdue. There, they had two daughters, Amy (Henk, Madeleine, Thompson, MB) and Emily (Adam, Nate, Sarnia, ON) before moving north to Thunder Bay to start a new adventure in Canada and adding a third daughter, Carissa (Eric, Emmet, St. Philip's, NL) to the family. Mac was a very proud Granddaddy and very much loved by his three grandchildren: Madeleine (11), Nate (7), and Emmet (5). He is also survived by three of his siblings, their families, and many close friends in Thunder Bay, Kingston, and beyond. Mac will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, rock gardens, and golf, for his long stories and dry humour. His family is very grateful for the incredible care he received from the Cancer Centre at KGH, and for the pleasure he found during walks at Lemoine Point Conservation Area in Kingston, identifying trees and hand-feeding birds. No service will be held. If moved to do so, donations can be made to the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario at KGH or to Friends of Lemoine Point, or simply enjoy a walk in the forest.

Shann: we are so sorry to hear of Mac’s passing and please accept our condolences. Pleasant memories remain to be sure however.
Watching you two convert a landmark run- down house to a beautiful home , classic department poker parties, and a deer hunting trip with Charlie Miller to the UP leap to mind.
Son Todd and I also chuckle as we recall Mac's foray into the field of making home-brew beer and the unique name he gave it : MACalobe!
Mac was a real friend- - he will be missed...

Mac was one of the great thinkers in Forestry. Deeply dedicated to student learning and professional forestry education. From our Purdue connections to our love of mathematics and statisitics, Mac and I had many great discussions. I am sorry to hear of his passing. I am richer (and way smarter) because I had Mac as a mentor and friend.

So very sorry to hear of Mac’s passing, Shann and family. We were neighbours on Parsons Avenue and your awesome girls used to babysit for us. So glad he got to be a granddad. You all take care of each other.
