KENNY WHENT Obituary

Well folks, if you are reading this obituary, it means that I did not make it. I have deliberately requested that I have a heart attack rather than stroke and I am hoping that is what occurred. There is no doubt that my family was close. My daughter Maggie is always near and Jake not too far away. Both of my grandchildren Alexis and Brandon are wonderful kids and were probably pretty close as well.

My dad, Jack Whent and my mom, Bluebelle were wonderful parents. They believed in education and removed me from Schreiber, where I grew up, to Fort William because they did not want me to become a CPR railroader or a Pulp and Paper employee. So, I ended up going to FWCI, then to the University of Minnesota Duluth and off to Osgoode Hall in Toronto where fortunately, I achieved my law degree and the opportunity of becoming a lawyer. What a wonderful occupation and the most enjoyable employment I could ever have acquired. Luckily when I attended FWCI, Marion Louise Hunter was there as well. In 1969 I was fortunate enough to marry her, and later we adopted Maggie and Jake but unfortunately lost Louise to cancer in 1982. In the following years we were blessed with a live-in nanny, Dette Stapleton (Arthurs) who organized the children and our house for about 4 years. She too was a blessing. It took me until 1987 to find a second person to share my life. I married Sharon Lorraine Haigh in March of 1991. Once again, I was blessed. What a wonderful wife. And then once again my happiness was interrupted when we lost Sharon to cancer in November of 2016. However as old folk know, we must get on with life.

I retired when Sharon and I were married in 1991, but it was not too long thereafter that I was back at the profession that I loved. In 2022, "they" insisted that it was time to fold up the tent and relax. Difficult to do but…

My appreciation to the many clients who sat across the table from me, to the lawyers I have had the opportunity to practise with over the years and to the staff who do the work for which we take the credit. Thanks to my family, my confreres, my clients and the community because you have made my life as enjoyable as one could possibly want. Goodbye.

Kenny leaves behind children Maggie and Jake, grandchildren Alexis (Brad) and Brandon, and many extended family members from the Whent, Kannegiesser, Haigh and Watkins families. While he was in the process of ramping operations down, he also leaves behind a thriving business headed by the wonderful Delma, who has also come to be part of the family. The family extends their gratitude to all of those who knew and loved Kenny and have been in contact to extend their condolences. A celebration of life will be taking place at the Valhalla Inn on January 30th, 2025 from 5-8pm.

He was the "glue" that held the widespread Kannegiesser clan together from coast to coast. His extensive e mail list kept everyone informed as to family comings and goings and many of his "old age" jokes were hilarious. His vicarious concern for my mother (the last of the original 16 Kannegiessers) was a bright spot for her and she will miss him dearly. He would call almost every day or visit for tea. He always left with cookies and she was left happy to have see/heard him. He will be missed by the whole extended family

Wow, Maggie: Who would have thought that just recently 2 weeks??? ago that this would happen? I have known Kenny for years, my mom loved having him over for pasta, she loved 'her Kenny' - we skied together, we were involved in dogs together, always good for a spin on the dance floor after skiing at Uncle Franks & it was at our wedding, Oct.14th, 1967 that Kenny came stag & so did my dear friend Louise HUNTER/BACKEN and well the rest is history, they danced, they dated & they married. Ironic after Louise (HUNTER) - (Backen/Whent) passed away that he met Sharon & she reminded us so much of Louise. Good choice Kenny. I have to say that if it weren't for LOUISE I wouldn't have been involved in DOBERMANS, she was instrumental in guiding me to Pat & John Blenkey - 5 decades + ago & I still have Dobermans, a far cry from all those Scottish Terriers eh? I thought Kenny would remain in this world forever, always so happy, jubilant & ready for any 'game'. My sympathy goes out to Maggie & Jake, Maggie's kids as well- Life is short, you Kenny made the best of every breath you took. Kenny was the first person I knew that had a mobile phone, and he phoned Mom & I while we lived on Valour Place, to say: Hey, just wondering if I could drop in - of course & there he was a MOMENT LATER, at the door!!! We had just had our first phone call from a mobile phone & a car (red convertible...Jaguar?) Can't remember, but he liked to play silly little games like that. You will always be alive in my heart Kenny, a very special guy- you always left with a smile, happy face & a hug. It asks if I am not sure what to say? When you talk of Kenny Whent, how could you not be sure what to say? Missing you 'will always be' - Maggie this just seems so unreal, big hug kiddo, if you need any assistance let me know. Will be in touch, this just doesn't seem real.
