Leo Ahola Obituary

SEPTEMBER 3, 1935 - FEBRUARY 7, 2012 Mr. Leo Antero Ahola, age 76 years, passed away peacefully in St. Joseph`s Hospital on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 with family by his side. Leo was born on September 3, 1935 in Haapajarvi, Finland to Vaino and Elsa Ahola. He came to Canada in 1969 with his family and held jobs in the bush camps and at various mines before working as a carpenter. Following retirement, Leo continued to complete carpentry jobs around the house and for his family. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as playing the accordion. Leo always looked forward to his annual fall trip around Lake Superior, with his wife Sirkka. He was a kind man with a great sense of humour and loved to make those around him smile. Leo is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sirkka; daughters Helen (Bob) Bingham, Arja (John) Zepik, Anne Venerus and Minna (Mike) Bihun; grandchildren Melanie, Ashley (Matt), Arja (Steve), Tina and Chris Venerus (Toronto) and great-grandchildren Sasha, Austin, Jack and Miia. Also surviving are his sister Lillja and brother Mauri and their families of Sweden; aunts Raili, Eila and Eeva of Finland as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in Sweden and Finland. He was predeceased by his parents, Vaino and Elsa Ahola and a brother Teuvo. Funeral services for the late Leo Ahola will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 1:00PM in Hilldale Lutheran Church with Pastor Jari Lahtinen officiating. Private family interment will take place in Sunset Memorial Gardens. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations made in memory of Leo to Hilldale Lutheran Church or the Northern Cancer Research Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
