LINDSAY LEGARDE Obituary

LEGARDE June 7th, 1943 - December 17th, 2025
Lindsay Pierre Legarde, 82, of Thunder Bay, Ontario and a member of Long Lake #58 First Nation, began his journey in the very early hours of December 17th, 2025. You should know that he bravely and fiercely fought for years but in the end he succumbed to the pernicious beast that is Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis but he did it on his own terms. He was held up in love until the very end by his family who sang him home to his relations.

Lindsay was born on June 7th, 1943, in Long Lake #58 First Nation, Ontario, and was the son of William N. Lagarde and Elizabeth Lagarde (nee Towegishig).

Lindsay's educational legacy includes being an Indian Residential Schooling System Survivor. Despite the violences he experienced, he forged lifelong friendships that he maintained until his passing. He later embraced education, and became an excellent role model for his children. Lindsay graduated from Confederation College with a Business Administration Diploma and was on the Dean's Honour Roll. He was also the Editor for the College's newspaper.

Mr. Legarde married Verna Legarde (nee Lyons) on February 5th, 1966, in London, Ontario. Together Lindsay and Verna raised two children, Jeffery Legarde and Dr. Keri Cheechoo (nee Legarde). Lindsay leaves behind five grandchildren: Rylee (Aws), Caitlin, Matthew, Nadia and Bentley (Tahshiina), and three great-grandchildren: Grayson, Ryenn and Spencer. Lindsay was pre-deceased by his siblings Evelyn, Donald, Corine, Douglas, and is survived by his brother Bradley.

Mr. Legarde had a long and illustrious career in First Nations Economic and Business Development with Nishnawbe Aski Nation, Ontario Native Women's Association and Matawa First Nations Management. Lindsay retired early, and enjoyed his retirement, playing the sport he loved most, golf.

In lieu of a formal wake and funeral services, Lindsay requested a Speakeasy be held in his honour. This celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, December 20th, 2025 at the Valhalla Inn's Fireside Room. Friends and family are invited to drop in between 3:00 pm and 8:00 pm to visit, tell stories and to say farewell. Lindsay's ashes will be buried on the land by water within the traditional territory of Long Lake #58 First Nation during the summer of 2026.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
