MARC MACHOLD Obituary

MACHOLD 1956 - 2023
Although bent on living, Marc died unexpectedly in hospital on December 6, 2023.

Marc left a lasting imprint on those who knew him. He will be forever missed by siblings and partners Tanya (David), Clea (Eddy), Rhys (Malene), nieces Sascha, Heidi, Finnley and baby nephew Felix along with relatives in Austria and Spain, special people in his life including Rita Martin who listened unconditionally as a family member, Ian Bolduc trusted to be his guardian angel, Dave Bradley longtime friend and fellow coach, Geoff Miller who had a wonderful relationship with Marc at Sherwin Williams as well as Janet, who always believed in him.

Born in Syracuse, New York, to Rainer and Ilse Machold, Marc attended Lakefield College School, Guelph University and Lakehead. He enjoyed many careers but his favourite time was on the slopes skiing and supporting the ski community - whether in Quebec, North Carolina or on the hills of Thunder Bay. Marc coached the Lakehead University Ski Team in the 90's to a USSA Central Division Championship. Over 40+ years, he helped others to become ski instructors themselves. As recently as last year, he coached racing at Mount Baldy with his friend Dave. In the summer, Marc was an avid tennis player, cyclist and in-line skater. And he could occasionally be seen riding his motorcycle on a weeknight through the beautiful surroundings of Thunder Bay. Marc enjoyed conversing about business, politics, history and simple joys such as, "What makes a good pierogi?"

The family is so grateful to the nurses in Oncology 1A of Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for their professional care, attentiveness and genuine understanding that surpassed all. To his team of doctors for pushing forward with cutting edge treatments - thank you.

Marc's passion for life was extraordinary and inspiring. He always asked about personal experiences beyond work. To Marc's wider circle of friendships - your outpouring of messages describing Marc as kind, fun, and unique resonate with truth and warmth.

A Celebration of Life to share memories will be announced in the spring of 2024.

Dave Bradley FB Post
It is with a very heavy heart that I share the news that my good friend and skiing compatriot, Marc Machold, passed away due to an illness this past week.
As fate would have it, Marc and I both settled in Thunder Bay where our friendship grew and where we both contributed to the local ski community in profound ways over the past 30+ years.
Marc and I began working together at a Chicopee Ski Club in Kitchener, ON under the great ski school director, Peter Schwirtlich. while we were in university in 1980/81 season. We have been friends ever since. I worked for him in 1985 at the Caledon Ski Club. He coached for me with the LSDA Ski D program in 94 and 95. He coached the Lakehead University Ski Team in the mid 90´s to a USSA Central Division Championship. And now 28 years later he worked with me as an assistant coach at PASC/Mount Baldy!
Marc also generously housed many of the incoming out-of-town LSDA coaches over the years... Yours truly on my Outland business trips before I moved to Thunder Bay permanently, Ulic Longford, Bill Real and Jason Lapierre. He was a great listener and would always have some thoughtful advice for all of the coaching fraternity back in the day!
Marc was well known in Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance (CSIA) circles as a long standing Course Conductor and in our local Thunder Bay ski scene through his involvement with Senior Circuit, coaching and instructing. On top of all of this he was a very successful Thunder Bay businessman.
Some of the comments I have received from Marc's friends at the news of his passing...
"...he always wanted the best for everyone and was genuinely interested in what everyone was doing.."
"...you could not have a better friend than Marc. He was there for his friends..."
"a passionate guys' guy, he loved skiing, F1, fast cars and investing money!"
"...Marc was a big part of the Thunder Bay ski scene"
"...he was a quiet soft spoken gentleman, a great sense of humor, nothing was ever too much trouble for him, he would go out of his way to make things happen..."
"... he'd always have a minute to talk about skiing/life and offer some advice..."
"...he had the best car, a 90's 300ZX... I picked one up 5 years ago, it's my favourite!"
"...I have some fun memories with Marc... the ski community is a special one and he will surely be missed by many"
"... he helped me in ski racing and helped me improve my skiing"
"... I remember Marc from my early forming years...great impact on me personally"
"...Marc was unique and quirky but a great guy..."
For those who new Marc, you will know all of this is true....
Marc had so much more to give as his commitment to the CSIA remained strong and his recent return to coaching was fueling a renewed excitement in the sport. Similar in age, and very good friends, there was no reason for Marc and I to believe we would not be making turns together and giving back to our community for many years to come.
Marc's passing leaves a hole in Thunder Bay skiing and the community at large that will not be easily filled.
Rest in peace my friend....

Marc also went to Stayner Collegiate in Stayner, Ontario from about 1975-1977. I road the school bus with Marc almost everyday. Marc would be waiting by their mailbox on River Road, near Creemore, at 8:15 am.
In 1976, Marc, Gord Lowe, and myself did a 20 minute, 3 screen, audio visual presentation, in geography class, and got a standing ovation. That was definitely a high-light for us at Stayner and cutting edge technology too . . .lol.

Marc also asked me to look after their farm on River Road for 2 weeks at Christmas time 1975. My 8 year old niece and I would bring in the cows and she would lay down in the hay trough while they were eating. That was such a peaceful moment. We also looked after their black lab and we tobogganed on the hill as much as possible.
Marc was a good friend. I had touched base with his sister Clea and I was hoping to go to Thunder Bay this spring and surprise visit Marc. It would have been about 45 years since I'd last seen Marc.
I have good memories of Marc.
My sincere condolences to Marc's family.
Rest in peace my friend.
