Margaret passed away on Saturday, September 13th, 2025 after a brief illness with family by her side. Born in Vancouver, BC she spent much of her youth stationed throughout Western Canada following the employment of her father, the Chief of the Canadian Pacific railway police. When their travels brought her to Fort William she met and married her husband Robert and together they raised their family on N. Maplewood Street, where she proudly remained for 65 years.
Margaret had many jobs throughout her life however she was the best at being a mom, at first to her own boys, then to her daughter-in-law Michelle, and finally to her two granddaughters. She was everyone's biggest fan, often providing support to all of us in quiet ways. Mom prepared and hosted family meals (dad wasn't much of a cook but he enjoyed good food), made cookies, pickles, soups, perogies, and found joy in ensuring everyone was well nourished ("there's nothing but good things in there"). In early retirement she enjoyed taking the grandchildren on walks, participating in grade school events, playing games, and being a no-wly paid chauffeur. Christmas was always special with extended family partaking in deep fried perogies, meat pies, shortbreads and an assortment of desserts from recipes gathered along the way. In return her family and friends gave her the strength to remain active until her 89th year.
More recently she found joy attending her grandchildren's sporting events, soaking up the sun at camp on Lake Superior, spending time in the park with friends, and playing Words With Friends with son Bryan. Always a "family first" fan, any opponent or referee was immediately not welcome to enjoy Nanna's food, at least until the game was over. She enjoyed travelling as she recently went to BC where the mountains and her son's home provided her joy, visited her granddaughter in both Guelph and Ottawa, and took numerous trips to Minnesota for basketball, hockey and shopping.
Mom was a source of love and support for all who knew her. Generous and kind in nature, her like minded friends served the community as volunteers at TBRHSC, the Shelter House, and whatever golf tournaments needed happy faces. Their friendship created an energy and spirit that served them all well. Alongside those who have passed (or moved) Sue Maydo, Olga Deschamps, Rose Fron and Helen Dorval your contribution to her life will be cherished by us forever.
She is survived by her sons Bryan and Michael (Michelle), granddaughters Shae and Reese, sisters-in-law Lilian Merkley (Bob) and Roberta Coffey, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents William and Martha Fletcher, husband Robert, as well as her brother Gordon Fletcher and sister Patricia Schriner. Also special in her life was Mackenzie Sedgwick who was always available to help in any way possible.
Many thanks to the care provided at TBRHSC over the past few months, in particular those on 2B who supported her and cleaned her room (she was always very meticulous), and those at St. Joe's Hospice who ensured her comfort in the last days. Dr. Kisselgoff, Dr. Odulaja, Dr. Sellick and Dr. Bassuony you are forever in our hearts. A special thanks to Dr. Franchi and staff who over the many years were never more than a phone call away, and to Chantelle at VON who diligently cared for her in between hospital stays.
We consider ourselves the luckiest family in the world for having Nanna in our life and are grateful for those who have shared her with us. She will be missed.
A private interment will take place with a service to be held at a later date.
