MARIA COSTA Obituary

February 22, 1933 - July 5, 2025
The family of Maria Costa announces with heavy hearts her passing after a long and heartbreaking struggle with dementia.

Maria was born in the parish of Bretanha, San Miguel, Azores on February 22, 1933. As the oldest daughter in a busy home of seven children, Maria adopted the caretaker role early in life, a role she would proudly fulfill for as long as she was able. She married her husband, Jaime, in 1958, but their story was cut tragically short by his untimely passing just over a year later. Although she never fully overcame this loss, Maria remained strong for their only son, Jaime, and eventually decided in 1970 to move their lives to Thunder Bay.

It was here Maria laid down roots for herself and Jaime. Supported by her loving siblings and their partners, Maria flourished learning English and quickly gaining employment as a dietary aide at Grandview Lodge, from which she would retire at age 60. This retirement allowed her more time to spend with her family, particularly her two grandchildren, who brought her immense joy. She provided them with unconditional love and support from the day they were born and was truly the best Avo anyone could hope for.

Staying true to her roots, and her unending desire to care for others, you never left Tia Maria's with an empty stomach (or empty pockets). She was in her glory during family gatherings when the Darosa cousins crowded into her home, ensuring everyone was well-fed, often not sitting down until they had been served at least twice. Family and faith were truly Maria's biggest passions in life, and she freely gave of everything she had without feeling burdened.

Maria is survived by her son, Jaime, and his wife, Debbie; sister Odelia; grandchildren Kristin, Kyle, along with his wife Michelle; first great grandchild, Jasper; and numerous nieces & nephews whom she loved so dearly. She is predeceased by her husband, Jaime; brothers & sisters-in-law: Manuel & Aldina Darosa; Luis & Paulina Darosa; Henrique & Celisa Darosa; Joe & Gilda Darosa; sister & brother-in-law Olivia & Joe Reis; brother-in-law Jose Machado; nephew Mario Darosa; & nephew-in-law Luis Felix.

Funeral services for Maria will take place on Thursday, July 10th, 2025 at St. Anthony's Parish (123 Hilldale Rd. Thunder Bay ON). Visitation will begin at 11:00, with the mass commencing at 12:00. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Anthony's Parish or the Alzheimer's Society of Ontario would be greatly appreciated.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma.

I also worked with Maria at Grandview Lodge in the 1970's. Maria remains in my memory as being one of the kindest people I have ever met, a truly beautiful person who I had the honour of working with. She was the reason I went to Portugal when I travelled to Europe .. & was not disappointed. My Deepest Condolences to her son Jaime & to her sister, Odelia & her family on their great loss.
