Maria Sgambelluri Obituary

Mrs. Maria Rose Sgambelluri, age 90 years, resident of Thunder Bay, died in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, on Sunday, June 24, 2001. Maria was born in Conflenti, Catanzaro, Italy. As a very young girl, she emigrated from Italy with her family settling in Port Arthur in 1914. Maria was married to Cosimo Sgambelluri June 8, 1935 in Port Arthur. He predeceased her in 1985. Maria's home and family were always extremely important to her and she truly enjoyed caring for her grand and great grandchildren. She enjoyed her flowers, working in her garden and always enjoyed cooking. She was a member of St. Agnes' Church and the Catholic Women's League. Maria is survived by her children; Mary Bruzzese, Rose Sabatini and husband Joe, Jerry Sgambelluri and wife Marge, Carmel Malanych and husband Carl, Judy Perozak and husband Dennis, John Sgambelluri and wife Connie. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; brothers Albert Villella and wife Leda and Fred Villella and wife Kay and sister Jenny Presot. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. Maria was predeceased by her parents Bruno and Antonia Villella, her husband Cosimo; daughter Teresa Fournier; grandson Ricky Sabatini; great-granddaughters Jessica Agombar and Lorraine Whatley; sisters Stella DeSando and Angie Trethewey and brothers-in-law Mike DeSando, Bill Trethewey and Basilio Presot. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2001 when family and friends will gather for Mass of the Resurrection in St. Agnes' Church at 12:10 p.m. celebrated by Rev. Francis Pudicherry. Private family interment services will precede the Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Diabetes Association or Elk's Children Trust Fund would be appreciated. A tree will be planted in memory of Maria Sgambelluri in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday, June 23, 2002."
