MARK HUMPHREY Obituary

MARK HUMPHREY March 11, 1958 - January 3, 2024
It is with great sadness that Mark's family announces his passing at the age of 65 on January 3rd at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Science centre with his family at his side.

He was a devoted father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his partner Janice, 3 sons and 2 granddaughters.

Mark was born in Port Arthur and grew up in Current River, where he returned in his later years.

Mark attended high school at Lakeview and later studied business administration at Confederation College. He went on to work at the Family business 'Humphrey Sanitation' as a salesman and later in life teamed up with his son Jason in his business Norwest Bins & Services as a salesman and consultant. He was also very into sports, both following and playing them. He competed at broomball and hockey in his early years, but his biggest passion was golf. He was always up for the 4man scrambles with his kids and You could always find him at Strathcona practicing, playing, and socializing. On top of that, Mark made many friends along the way with whom they made countless memories.

Mark is predeceased by his parents Basil and Dorothy and survived by his brother Don, his long-time partner Janice McDonald, sons Jason (Sydney), Michael (Hannah), Matthew (Victoria) and two granddaughters Iris and Grace. Mark and Janice had a blended family and was known as 'Papa Mark' to Janice's grandchildren.

He has left his family and new grandchildren far too soon and will be deeply missed by all his family and friends. The family is extending an open invitation to join in a Celebration of Life for Mark at the Current River Recreation Centre on January 17th from 4-7pm.

In lieu of Flowers, donations can be made in Mark's honour to the Strathcona Junior Golf Club at the Celebration of Life.

Jason, Mike and Matt,

Debbie and I were very sad to learn of your father's passing. He was a good gentleman and was so very proud of you all. I had a nice chat with him at last fall's NWO Sports Hall of Fame dinner where he organized some of his golfing buddies to have a photo taken of them all. He will be missed by many.

Our condolences to the family. Mark was a great person. I'm so happy have had an opportunity to spend a long chat with Mark at the invitational . We talked about trying to get together for a round of golf and all the good times we had at red rock and at the golf for gold in Geraldton. He was so well liked he will be missed by all.

In 1967, our grade 3 year, Canada´s Confederation, the government instituted the Canada Fitness Test for boys and girls. The challenge included the flexed arm hang, in which participants hung from a bar, palms inwards, eyes at bar level. Many who went through that test still have ptsd recalling the flexed arm hang. The gold standard was maybe 30 seconds. In the basement of Current River School, the teacher had to tell Mark to come down. He´d still be up there. Later, I´d marvel at Mark´s golf swing, angular, technically perfect, and automatic. I played with Mark on the first organized hockey team many in these posts played on. Outdoor hockey - we were undefeated, won the Port Arthur City Championships. The newspaper writer said it was the first time in many years that Current River had won. Sure, we were 9, and of course everyone´s lives carried on into youth, adolescence, adulthood. Marriage, jobs, kids, and grandkids. Some moved away. Hockey was an easy game, right? When you´re 9, you think every season´s going to be undefeated. My sincere condolences to Mark´s family and friends. I´m sorry for his passing.

I was very sorry to hear about Mark. My deepest condolences to his family.
We lived across the street from Mark and our parents were good friends. We had a pretty big gang of kids back then on Strathcona - at the rink or in the forests behind his parents house. The memories I have of him as a young man make me smile - he had that effect on anyone who knew him.

I had the pleasure of knowing Mark since my junior golf days at Strathcona in the early 70s. Always a class act, competitor and a great business man. Played with team Humphrey this past summer in Terrace bay on day two of the tournament. An amazing job mark has done raising three sons.
Crazy world we live in another has left way too soon.
Condolences to the Humphrey family.
God Bless you during these difficult times.

For Mark and the Humphrey Family. Mark and I were fortunate to spend many cherished times growing up in Thunder Bay comparing many issues and subjects regarding life, and discussing many aspects of many sports. Our forte was talking about many aspects of Golf while practicing our putting at our Strathcona Course including many many other Sporting issues such as Hockey, Football, Baseball, and more. You know Mark, you will be missed by all of us, my good friend Mark

I was lucky enough to grow up with Mark, mostly talking about family, playing sports, and having fun. He was a good man, bright, hard working, caring compassionate, and empathetic. His greatest strengths were his love for his boys, grandchildren, and partner Janice. He could make me laugh, cry, and always put a smile on my face. He listened because he cared about you, and would give you the shirt off his back. Goodbye for now buddy.

I was absolutely crushed to hear about my Current River bestie. A great man and a greater friend. Endless sock hockey games in his basement, road hockey, ice hockey and golf growing up. I was blessed to spend time with Mark while home visiting in July. Geez he could make you laugh and smile. He had just texted me a couple of weeks ago showing off his new grandbaby. My sincerest condolences to all of the Humphrey family. RIP brother.
