Martin O'Kroneg Obituary
1920 - 2005Mr. Martin Edward O'Kroneg, age 84 years, a long time resident of Walkover Street, passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening, March 15, 2005 in St. Joseph's Hospice Unit with his loving family at his side.Born and raised in Atikokan on November 20th, 1920, Martin's parents were Annie and John O'Kroneg. He served in WWII as a Gunner with the Royal Canadian Artillery and had fought in the war from England through to Germany. Martin met and married Dutchie in Holland during the war. Dutchie was a war bride and Martin married the love of his life on November 28th, 1945. Together Martin and Wiesje (Dutchie) ran Martin's Men's and Ladies Wear from 1939 until 1975 in Atikokan. As an Owner/Operator, he had also ran the Atikokan Sports Centre. On January 9th, 1956 Martin joined Alcoholic's Anonymous and was very active and proud to be associated with 'AA'. He had purchased an island on Crystal Lake, just outside of Atikokan and over the years they built a beautiful summer home. After Martin's retirement, they enjoyed their summer home on Crystal Lake, however his family, friends and associates were his main focus throughout his life.Survived by his loving wife Wiesje (Dutchie) of 59 years of marriage; two sons John (Mary Jo) of Gibsons, B.C. and Ted (Barb) of Bridgewater, N.S. ; two granddaughters Keri and Tracy (Andrew); great-grandson Ryan; sister-in-law Lucy of Winnipeg. Numerous nieces, nephews and other family members also survive. Martin was predeceased by his parents Annie and John O'Kroneg; brother Peter and sister Margaret Rolling.As per Martin's wishes, Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 18, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre with Rev. John Schmidt of Calvary Lutheran Church officiating. Services to be completed in the Chapel with interment at a later date in the Atikokan (Old) Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the time of service in Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in Martin's memory to the Salvation Army or to the charity of choice.God Grant me the ....Serenity to accept the things I cannot change...Courage to change the things I can...Wisdom to know the difference......and...Gratitude for each...sober day..."
