Mary Fayrick Obituary

Mary Margaret Fayrick, age 89 years, a resident of Thunder Bay, passed away in Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on Monday, April 16, 2012. Mary was born in Fort William and was proud to have been raised in Westfort where she attended St. Martin's and later St. Patrick's High School before starting a long working career. Like many women of her age, she first worked on the assembly line at Canada Car & Foundry assisting in the war effort in the production of the Hawk`er Hurricane. She also told stories of working at Marine Grocers and the Bank of Montreal, among others. Mary gravitated to jobs and volunteering where she was able to work with people and is probably best known for the many years she worked in the concessions at the Fort William Gardens for the City of Thunder Bay. Mary loved to sing, read, do crosswords and knit (many neighbourhood kids received mitts instead of candy on Hallowe'en). She was a longtime member of the CWL and served at St. Elizabeth's Church and later St. Patrick's Cathedral where she was a member of the Hospitality Ministry Team. She also volunteered for many years for the Lakehead Association for Community Living. Mary is survived by her sons Paul (Silvia Schiavone) and Joseph (Pamela); daughter Lora Barbisan (David McQuay); grandchildren Mark Barbisan, Dylan, Cassandra, Michael & Julia Fayrick as well as sisters Eileen Capulak and Leona Cotnam (Kingston). Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. She was predeceased by her parents; husband Frank in 1979 and grandson Tyler Barbisan in 2000. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 19, 2012, when family and friends will gather for Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Cathedral celebrated by Rev. Msgr. P.M. Stilla V.G. Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday evening, April 18, 2012 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Blake Funeral Chapel. If friends desire, memorial donations to the Lakehead Association for Community Living would be greatly appreciated. A tree will be planted in memory of Mary Fayrick in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday, June 9, 2013.
