MAUREEN KAHN Obituary
MAUREEN KAHN (née McCulloch)
Maureen Kahn, née McCulloch, passed away surrounded by loved ones on 23 March 2026 following a lengthy decline from Alzheimer's disease. Maureen was born on 19 March, 1944 in Thunder Bay and spent her early years in Port Arthur where she attended Jumbo Gardens School and Port Arthur Collegiate. She went on to complete a BA with honours in English and German at Queen's University. After university she moved to Toronto where she worked in publishing and as a freelance writer-editor. Living in the Beaches, where she raised her family, she was active in the community, working with local politician Marion Bryden and helping found the Beaches Alternative School. In the early 1990s she took over ownership of Cover to Cover Books and, several years later, opened What the Dickens, a second-hand bookshop-café, where she enjoyed lively interactions with a diverse and dedicated group of regulars. She later taught English to adult learners in Toronto, the UK and Germany before moving back to Thunder Bay.
Maureen was a creative woman with a sharp wit and keen intelligence. She was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed playing and listening to music throughout her life. She enjoyed the arts and, in addition to attending theatre, dance and music performances, took ballet lessons for years, forging strong friendships with a group of local women in the Beaches. She was gifted with languages, speaking French and German well and taught herself to read Italian. Maureen made invaluable contributions as a volunteer with organisations such as Toronto's East End Literacy and Elevate of Thunder Bay, where she received the Ontario Volunteer Service Award for her many years volunteering.
Maureen was predeceased by her father Thomas and mother Amy McCulloch and brother Robert. She will be deeply missed by her son Ben (Liz) daughter Clea (Andrew), grandchildren Thomas and Victoria, sisters Susan (Dennis) and Kathryn (Ed) and brother Tom (Bonnie), and by nieces Erin (Reed), and Kathryn (Cory) and nephew Jordan (Kelly).
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the team of caregivers at Kensington Gardens Long Term Care Home for their care and support to Maureen in the last years of her life, as well as a special thank you to Maureen's private caregivers Carol, and Stacey for their kindness and devotion to Maureen. We will forever be grateful.
If desired, donations in Maureen's name can be made to Elevate NWO.
A family graveside service will take place at a later date.
