Max James Johnson, age 68, passed away peacefully in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on February 26, 2023, with family by his side.
Max was born on December 9, 1954, in Bowmanville, Ontario. He began his career as a teacher in several First Nation communities including Ogoki, Wapekeka, KI and Walpole Island, eventually transitioning to a role at INAC where he worked until his retirement. Max made lifelong friendships throughout his work and always had fond memories to share of his time with colleagues.
Max maintained a positive outlook on life and would never turn down a good bet. He enjoyed listening to music, watching football and golf, as well as his hours spent playing in local pool leagues, riding motorcycles and cooking for those he loved. Max will be remembered for his zest for life, wonderful sense of humour and sharp wit, leading to many shared laughs. He was so caring and truly one of a kind. Devoted husband, exceptional dad and grandpa, Max always ensured that his loved ones knew how blessed he felt and how proud he was.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his dear wife of 43 years, Kanita; children Tim (Twila), Paul (Cassandra), Kanisha (Rich), and Karly (Michael); grandchildren Martha, Matthew, Taylor, Mariam and Eva; brother Robert (Jennifer); along with two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Ronald and Theresa Johnson; granddaughter Mary Krug and brothers Bernie, Johnny (Shirley) and Jason Johnson (Annie).
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and support workers at TBRHSC for their compassionate care.
A Celebration of Max's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre presided by Pastor Angus Chapman. Visitation will begin one hour prior. Interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens will follow the reception. The service will be livestreamed and archived at www.harbourviewfuneral.ca where condolences may be offered as well.

Kanita and Family: I just learned of Max's passing. He was a great guy to work with. He was so proud of his family. I often recall the good and sometimes challenging times Max and I and the others in our team at the Department had. I'm sorry I was unable to attend his celebration of life. He will be missed.
