1924-2011 It is with great sadness the families of Michael Charney announce his passing on January 13, 2011. Michael was born in Marco Manitoba but called Thunder Bay home. Survived by his son Gary, sister in law Susan Charney (Rossburn) and numerous nieces and nephews in Thunder Bay as well as in Manitoba. He was predeceased by his partner and best friend Mildred Anstett, sisters Mary (John), Mabe l(Matt),Anne (Nick) and brothers Tom (Susan), Russell (Martha). Mike enlisted with the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment in 1944 and served in Britain, Holland and Germany and was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Metal, the France and Germany Star and the War Metal. Mike was relieved of his peacekeeping duties in 1946. Upon returning to Rossburn he was issued a teaching permit and taught for a period of time in the Zaporzan and Seech districts of Manitoba. Mike moved to Thunder Bay in the early 50's and was employed for 22 years at Western Grocers thereafter receiving employment at Confederation College until retirement. His early retirement years were spent traveling, golfing and gardening. As per Michael's wishes cremation has taken place. No service will be held. Announcement of his interment which will take place in the spring will follow closer to that date.
