Michael Page Obituary

DR. MICHAEL JOHN PAGE PhDMedical Research ScientistWith profound sorrow, Sonja and Roger Page, announce the sudden passing of their dear, loving, youngest son, Michael at the age of 36. He passed away after collapsing in a restaurant on his way home from his research laboratory at the University of California in San Francisco on the 6th of June, 2013. After graduating from Port Arthur Collegiate Michael went to Carleton University in Ottawa and obtained an Honours Degree in Biochemistry with Distinction. He then moved to Vancouver to pursue a PhD at the University of British Columbia. It was there that Michael did research with Dr. Ross MacGillivary, who was a great mentor and friend.Postdoctoral studies ensued at Washington University in St. Louis, where he met the second of his great mentors, Dr. Enrico Di Cera. Upon receiving a Research Grant from the American Heart Association, Michael moved to San Francisco to continue his research with his third great mentor, Dr. Charles Craik. One of Michael's greatest achievements was the development of a peptide-based probe that detects harmful blood clots in real time and will quantify their threat. He and his team won a major biochemical entrepreneurship competition. This stimulated him to patent his discovery and form a research company called Biopaint Inc . Michael's most recent research, which brought him great excitement, was the work with Dr. Kim Kirkwood with respect to pancreatic cancer detection. Michael's passing has left a big void in the lives of his three older brothers: Paul and Daughters Madison and Hannah, Robert (Nicola) and children Eleanor and Charles, and Richard. Michael will be sadly missed by the following close relatives: Aunts Marian Page Joan Poulter (Fred): cousins David Seaman (Tammy) and children Mark and Jeffrey, John Seaman and son Quinten, Paul Roberts (Carolyn) and children Matthew and Katherine: Grandmother Mabel Willick and Great Aunt Marjorie Carnell. Dr. Louise Yeung, whom Michael had met at Washington University, was the love of his life. She remains brokenhearted at losing Michael so young. They had enjoyed making many plans while Louise continued her studies, to become a surgeon. Together, they looked forward to a bright and happy future that included their dog Cleo.Louise's parents Rose and Danny, and her sister Lydia, will miss Michael very much. Michael's dedication to pushing back the frontiers of science has come to an abrupt halt but his peers have acknowledged that his research will form the basis of a multitude of aspects in health related issues. The way to love anything is to realize it may be lost. Our life was a better place with you in it Michael. The world is now a better place because of you.~ Rest in Peace ~A memorial celebrating the life of Michael followed by a reception will be held Sunday June 30th, at 1pm, at the Sargent & Son Funeral Home 21 North Court Street Thunder Bay, Ontario In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Northern Ontario School of Medicine on Michael's behalf.
