MICKEY KANAK Obituary

October 7, 1948 ~ January 28, 2026 It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Mickey Kanak on January 28, 2026 in the presence of his wife and family in the home that he loved and built with his own hands.

Born on October 7, 1948 in Regina, SK to Nick and Irene Kanak, Mickey was a busy and enterprising child who inherited his mother's fierce independence and his father's work ethic and love of people. Although they moved to Thunder Bay when he was young, frequent trips out west to the farm fostered a lifelong love of the prairies.

In November of 1969, Mickey married the love of his life, Eleanor, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned more than 5 decades. He spent many years working in the trades as a steam fitter before stepping into the role of Mechanical Supervisor at Firebag in Fort McMurray - a position he deeply enjoyed and often described as one of his favorite chapters of his working life.

Mickey found joy in all aspects of life - living, learning and working in it and through it. His zest for the adventures it contained was insatiable. He loved fishing, hunting and working outdoors - having a deep appreciation for God's creation. He enjoyed woodworking and above all he enjoyed people. If someone needed advice or a hand, he was always available. He made time for anyone who asked and often even those who didn't.

Mickey is lovingly remembered by his wife Eleanor; children Yvonne (Jeremy) and Keith (Judit); grandchildren Kylene (Nic), Nikolaus (Paige), Georgia, Calla and Kendra; great-grandchild Jesse; sisters Sandi (Larry) and Judy and many nieces and nephews.

His adult life was marked by his great faith and devotion to God, which was evident to everyone who spent time with him. He will be deeply missed and forever loved and remembered.

Funeral Services for Mickey will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at Grace Evangelical Free Church, 289 Court Street North. A private family interment will take place.

Glynis and I were really sorry to hear of Mickeys passing and our thoughts are with Eleanor and Family. Mickey's visits were always filled with a lot of laughter, teasing and good conversation. He was one of my Dad's favourites and his visits to the farm were always welcomed and fun. He will be missed....

Growing up I was best friends with his sister Judy. I spent many weekends at the Kanak home. Mickey came to my mom's funeral in 2020. At first I didn't recognize him as he stood patiently in front of me. Then someone greeted him from a distance. As recognition dawned, he opened his arms wide and gave me one of the biggest, tightest hugs I have ever had. It meant more than any words he could have said. I will be praying for all his family in the coming days and weeks.

I was so sorry to hear of Mickey´s passing. Even though we weren´t family, it always felt like we were. His dad and my dad were best buddies. So much so that Nick was his best man and we all called him Uncle. To Mickey, my other brother, rest easy in the arms of Jesus.

Remembering the wonderful times paddling up north through God´s creation enjoying our fellowship with one another. Those were great memories sitting around the camp fire discussing God´s sovereignty and greatness. See ya soon. Richard Lindberg.

Mickey helped me and my husband finish our basement and taught me so many little useful things that a person should know (like how to paint or change a washer in a bathroom tap). I am so sad to hear he had passed - recently I was speaking about him and wondering if he still had all his "man toys" like he used to call them. My condolences to his family and especially his wife whom we met a few times ... he was truly a great man and I will always remember his kindness and respect he brought to my family. Good Bless. RIP.

Eleanor and family, we are grateful for the many years of having known Mickey, his friendship, encouragement and the example he lived in sharing his faith. We´ll miss the good conversations and his sense of humour. Most of all, his zeal for wanting to serve the Lord. May God bless and comfort you all.
