NIKKI BERTONE Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Nikki Bertone announce her peaceful passing at the age of 75 at St. Joseph's Hospice.

Nikki was born in Italy in the town of S. Maria del Molise. Her early years were spent in Italy and at the age of 7 she emigrated to Canada with her family settling in Fort William.

After high school she went to Sault Ste. Marie to train as a hairdresser and upon her return she was employed at Dorothy's Beauty Salon for many years. At the age of 26 she moved to Toronto where she continued to work as a hairdresser. Eventually she furthered her education and became a teacher of hairdressing.

Following that, she left teaching and was employed by Redpath Sugar as a receptionist. Working here she met her future husband, Fred Upshaw.

Nikki and Fred lived in Toronto for many years before relocating to Thunder Bay. Nikki was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and she lived with the cancer for many years.

Left to mourn are her husband Fred, her sisters Phil (Barry), Mary (Paul), her brother Michael (Rose), her stepdaughter Lisa (Brent), step grandchildren Olivia and Jorja, nieces Shelly (Jeff), Amanda (Alex), Nicole (Pawan), nephew Anthony and numerous great nieces and nephews. Nikki is predeceased by her parents, aunts and uncles.

Her family would like to thank her oncologists Dr. Sicheri and Dr. Simpson as well as Dr. Bassuony and all the wonderful medical staff who have provided her with compassion and exceptional care.

Nikki requested simple final arrangements with cremation which has already taken place and no service. In lieu of flowers, donations to a Charity of Your Choice would be appreciated.

"Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near. So loved, so missed and held so near". (Elizabeth Kubler Ross)
