It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Nino Bucciarelli on Friday, October 31, 2025, surrounded by his loving daughters in his home. Nino was born December 25, 1932, in Il Casino di Delfico, provincia di Teramo, Italy, where the Bucciarelli Family originated, and later relocated to the city of Teramo where he grew up. He was the second born of four children to Luigi and Giovina Bucciarelli.
As a young adult, Nino served in the Italian army and then moved to France where he apprenticed as a brick mason; which became his lifelong trade. Nino, wanting a better life for his future family, boarded the ship Ryndam from Le Havre, France to join his wife Lucia De Antoniis in Canada; they shared 65 years of wedded bliss. He arrived on November 24, 1956, in Halifax, Nova Scotia and continued his long journey by train via Montreal to Longlac, where he took a bus to Port Arthur, Ontario. Having no one to pick him up, he had to walk in the snow from the train station to 42 North Court Street in his Italian leather shoes. Nino began work immediately the following day on Lake Superior, checking the depth of the ice for the boats coming in. Following his first job on the lake, he worked on many buildings around Northwestern Ontario as a mason. In 1965 he began work at Great Lakes Paper Mill and ended his career there after 25 years.
Nino was a lifetime member of the Italian Society of Port Arthur who thoroughly enjoyed his afternoon card games in the members' room. From a young age, he taught his granddaughters how to play cards - everything from crazy 8's to briscola. Throughout the summer months, Nino was an avid fisherman, who spent many years at White Fish Lake with his friend George. He also enjoyed gardening and sharing the fruits of his labour, making it mandatory for everyone in the family to take photos with his oversized tomatoes and zucchinis. When he wasn't in the garden, he enjoyed sitting on his front steps, making conversation with anyone who walked by and keeping an eye out for all - the real neighbourhood watch. In recent years, he enjoyed this time with his grand-dog Toby, which kept Nino busy and happy for hours. If Nino wasn't in the back yard or on the front steps, he was definitely in his sanctuary, the garage. Mr. "Fix It" would spend hours working on just about anything from the snowblower to Alana's stilettos - there was no challenge he wouldn't take on. In the last few years, when he could no longer hide out in the garage, he was always there to give advice and brainstorm on any project his grandchildren were doing in their new homes. He loved solving puzzles and doing his word searches to keep his mind and eyes sharp; that was extremely important for him to view all of Andraya's sporting events, where everyone knew him as "Nonno".
Though his granddaughters were his pride and joy, nothing made him happier than stepping into his new role as Bisnonno. Visiting with his great-grandchildren always brightened his day, just as much as sitting with his best friend Toby.
Nino is survived by his daughters Loana, Carla (Darrell) Tremblay; granddaughters Alana (Luigi) Valente, Andraya (Scott) Bergson; great-grandchildren Santino, Gigi, and Luca Valente; sister-in-law Linda Bucciarelli, Anna Di Eugenio, Adele D'Angelo, and special nephew Luigi Bucciarelli. As well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in Toronto, Italy, and France.
Nino was predeceased by his parents Luigi and Giovina Bucciarelli, brothers Pasquale and Claudio, sister Anna, sister-in-law Concetta, father and mother-in-law Pasquale and Assunta De Antoniis, brothers and sister-in-law Quintino and Giovanna De Antoniis, Domenico Di Eugenio, Tonino D'Angelo, and niece Iva Di Eugenio.
