Norman William Kortes died peacefully, surrounded by family at St. Joseph's Hospice on March 1, 2026, after living with Parkinson's disease for many years. Born June 8, 1943, to Marie Antoinette ("Tonie") Guay and Vaios ("Bill") Kortes (Koutsokostas), Norm built a life defined by community and a generous enthusiasm for the people and pursuits he loved. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Marianne; daughter Kathy Kortes-Miller (Kevin); son Michael (Cindy Wong); and grandchildren Allegra, Dawson, Reed, and Asher. He was predeceased by his parents and his beloved sister, Mariena. A graduate of the University of Alberta, Norm worked for many years with the Bank of Nova Scotia in both Toronto and Calgary, first in computing and later in finance. An accomplished bridge player, Norm spent many evenings confidently explaining to his bridge partners how the hand should have been played. Although a recreational curler and golfer, Norm was perhaps better known for his flair with a barbeque. An early riser, an enthusiastic traveler, Norm was gifted with a natural attention to detail which served him well over the decades as a dedicated numismatist. A lifelong model train enthusiast, he was also a supporter of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, where he volunteered on the board. A longtime member of Corpus Christi Parish and volunteer with the Regional Food Distribution Association, Norm believed in showing up for his community. He loved animals and they loved him. Norm embodied the adage of a life well lived. His legacy lives on in the lessons he taught and the spirit he shared. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at 1:30 p.m. at Corpus Christi Parish celebrated by Rev. Terry Sawchuk. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in his name to the Regional Food Distribution Association, Roots Community Food Centre, or the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra.
