Monday, May 23, 2011 The family of Elder Norman Moonias age 89 years, announces his passing on Monday, May 23, 2011 at Dawson Court, Thunder Bay, Ontario with his family by his side. Norman leaves his wife Susan (nee Simon); sons David (Daisy), William (Sarah), Thadius (Katherine), Tommy Joe (Theresa), Dominic, Roy (Lillian), Eli (Josephine) and Allan (Marlene) and daughter, Sally Sakanee (Albert - predeceased). He also leaves behind his sister Katherine Ostamas and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, father Misan Monians and mother Angele Anamiewinini, brothers, sisters and his daughter, Rita Moonias. Norman was born and raised in Lansdowne House and Neskantaga Traditional Area. He lived his life to the fullest as a traditional hunter and trapper raising his children and providing for his family. Norman was a devout Roman Catholic but he maintained his traditional way of life using natural medicine and cultural teachings as his guide. His traditional harvesting area was the Ekwan River which is now part of the Ring of Fire territory. Norman was a gifted carver and had his work displayed at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery and in private collections. Norman began carving as a hobby in the early 1970's. His carvings accurately reflected his traditional way of life. The Art Gallery noted that even after he had lost his sight he was able, by touch, to identify each carving and through interpretation, to convey the meaning of each of his works to the gallery staff which in turn has allowed them to educate and inform gallery visitors about his work. A proud father, grandfather, and great-great grandfather he was a committed husband, a teacher and friend to all that knew him. Norman was a very humble man, who had a lot to offer to those that sought his advice. He was strongly principled in that he believed that in doing an honest day's work could provide peace and satisfaction in one's life. He not only leaves behind his family but leaves a legacy of traditional teaching and cultural skills. Norman will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends. Norman had been a resident at Dawson Court for close to 5 years. The family extends its heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the staff of Dawson Court Home for the care and support of Norman.
