ONYX WAWIA Obituary

Onyx Levy Wawia, born November 6, 2021, in Toronto, ON, passed away on March 9, 2026 in his hometown of Thunder Bay, ON, due to illness. He was the beloved son of Benedict Wawia and Melissa Kowtiash.

Onyx or Baby Ony, as he was lovingly known as to his family, was a blessing to all who got to know him. His journey on this earth was one of struggle, which he handled with strength and perseverance. His passing has left a sorrow in the hearts of all his family, friends and those that got to know him.

Onyx is survived by his loving parents Ben and Melissa, his sister Kailey and brother Benny. Onyx was the cherished grandson of his predeceased grandparents Roxanne Kowtiash and Andre Nobis. As well as his surviving grandparents David Winters, Benedict Wawia and Tamara Donio. He also leaves behind aunts, Brooke Wawia and Tara Kowtiash (Scott), uncles, Bronson Wawia (Nikki) and Randy Kowtiash, and many cousins who loved him dearly.

Onyx was very easy going, loved listening to music and getting cuddles from his dad. He loved to sprawl out across your legs as well as getting his forehead and hair rubbed. He was very sensitive to noise but loved being around his noisy brother and sister. Even though he was G-Tube fed he really enjoyed tasting ice cream and lollipops.

Although he was small and his time with us was short, he left a profound impact on all our lives. From his surprised gasps to his judgemental side eye look, everything will be dearly missed. The lessons of patience and unconditional love will never be forgotten and forever cherished. Even though Onyx may no longer be with us, his spirit will always guide and inspire us. As he continues on his journey, he will forever be a guiding light in our hearts to help us all through our own.

We would like to give a special thank you to all the medical personnel at Toronto Sick Kids, Thunder Bay Paediatrics, George Jeffery Children's Centre, Victorian Order of Nurses Canada as well as his Complex Care Team for all their dedication and kindness towards Onyx's health.

Funeral services for Onyx will be held in the R. Leino Memorial Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre on Thursday, March 26, 2026 presided by Rev. Mr. Michael Robinson at 11:00 a.m. Visitation for family and friends will begin one hour prior.
