Paul Honkey Obituary

It is with saddened hearts the family of Paul Douglas Fredrick Honkey announce his peaceful passing in St. Joseph's Hospice Unit, on November 7, 2013.Born in Russell, Manitoba in 1943 to Fred and Clara Honke. Paul was raised on the family farm. When he was 13 the farm was sold and the family moved to Whitedog Falls. In 1958 the family relocated to Fort William, where Paul then remained for the rest of his life.Paul started his career at age 18 as a welder's helper welding in various capacities at the Fort William Shipyards. In 1965 he became a pipefitter welder with the United Association of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local #628. He continued with his welding career both in Canada and the USA welding at paper mills, hydro and nuclear plants and spent many years on the Trans Canada Pipeline. In 1977, and over the next 15 years, Paul was elected to various positions of Executive member, Vice President and President and trustee on health and welfare and pension, of his Local #628.In 1992 Paul was appointed to the position of training co-ordinator and welding instructor. A position he held until retirement in 2003.Paul had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening as well as working with wood and making many ornaments for the family home and toy boxes for the grandchildren.Paul is survived and sadly missed by his loving wife Lola of 36 years; his children Kevin (Amilia), Paul Jr. (Wendy), Delina (Josh); stepsons Troy and Barry Ostapow; grandchildren Senna, Trevor and Katelyn; step-grandchildren Annlea, Amanda and Carly. Paul is also survived by his brothers Melvin (Linda) of Bolton, Ontario, Garfield (Winnie) of Thunder Bay, Rodney (Hendrina), Don (Gaetana) and his sister Gwen (Scott) all of Sarnia, Ontario. Also survived by brothers-in-law Don (Carmen), Ken (Helen) and Wayne Hutsul; sisters-in-law Julie Roberts and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. He will be sadly missed by many colleagues and friends. Predeceased by his parents Fredrick and Clara Honke as well as aunts and uncles.A Celebration of Paul's Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 in the Chapel of Jenkens Funeral Home with Rev. Arleen Berg officiating. Reception to follow. Interment will take place at Mountain View Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Paul's memory to St. Joseph's Hospice Unit, Canadian Diabetes Association or the Northern Cancer Fund.On line condolences at:www.jenkens-funeral.ca"
