1926
2018
On Dec. 22nd, 2018 heaven opened it's gates for another angel, Pekka (Pete) Mickael Haavisto left his earthly home to be with family in the after life . He passed suddenly, and had no preceding health issues.
Pete was blessed to live a country life of 92 years without illness. Pete was an extremely good man, always kind, benevolent and compassionate. He loved children, all animals and Jesus.
Pete had an uncanny gift to remember birthdays, names of friends, family, whether living or deceased, whether in Finland or local. Birthdays were special for him and he would sing to each of us - even if it was over the phone. He had such a lovely singing voice.
Pekka was born Oct. 2nd, 1926, in Ikaalinen, Finland. He lived a large part of his life at his parents small farm in Shebandowan, which his parents had pioneered in 1927 shortly after they immigrated from Ikaalinen, Finland.
The last 18 years he lived with his youngest sister, Joyce and her husband Cliff and daughter Rebekka in the Slate River Valley. Here he spent his golden years doing what he loved: gardening, farming, scything hay for the horses, chopping wood - those where his passions, he truly enjoyed being outdoors and took great joy and pride through hard work.
Pete's favourite time of year was Christmas. He took great joy in family time and attending Christmas church.
Pete's ever lasting presence will be enormously missed. He was a rare gem, that blessed us all with his laughter, purity, and genuine love. He taught us so much about how to be a good human by his daily presence, attitude and his beautiful soul.
Pete was the eldest of all 6 children born in the Haavisto family in Shebandowan. Pete is survived by sisters Salme Frost, and Joyce Redden and long with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by: Martta and Emil Haavisto (Shebandowan ON), brothers Roy Haavisto (Penticton BC), Walter Haavisto (Shebandowan ON), sister May Walsh (Kakabeka ON), nephew Leonard Redden (Shebandowan ON), nephew Lorne Frost Jr (Thunder Bay ON), niece Cassandra Haavisto (BC).
There will be a private graveside memorial service held at Stanley Hill for family Friday, Dec. 28th (today) at 11:30am, following a small gathering for coffee/tea and snacks at the Kakabeka Lutheran Church.
If friends so desire , in lieu of flowers, donations to The Shelter House would be greatly appreciated by the family.
