PENELOPE NUMBERS Obituary

We are sad to announce the peaceful passing of Penelope (Penny) Numbers (nee Eoll), age 80 years, on June 2, 2023. She was born during WWII and liked to tell the story of how her dad traded ration coupons to obtain bananas as she had allergies to many foods. In her early years, she enjoyed skating, piano, sewing, painting and spending time at the family camp near Atikokan. She met and married Doug and they both began long teaching careers at Nip-Rock High School. Penny taught mainly English and History. While teaching she also ran a busy boarding kennel for over 40 years. She raised champion Great Pyrenees and enjoyed confirmation showing, obedience and rally. Penny also had a love for the many stray cats that were dropped off at her kennel. She provided food, lodging and affection (to those that would allow it!). Over the years Penny and Doug gave a home to many teens they fostered. As well, Penny loved and nurtured her "kennel kids", forming many long term relationships. She helped shape many young lives by teaching them work ethics, business skills, responsibility and a love of dogs. As well as the fun road trips to dog shows near and far. Predeceased by her husband Doug (2015), her parents Daphne and Kenneth Eoll, brother Christopher and other family members. Survived by her "chosen" families, The Fortier's: Brenda, Michel, Kevin (Rebecca), Hazel (Chris, Desiree, Devaney, Danika), Darrell (Terry) and Shardae. The McLean's: Kelly (Rilla, Danny), Don, Shelley and Amber. Many thanks to her longtime home care nurse Wendy Houston. Also her many neighbours and friends that helped her so much in so many ways over the years. Too numerous to list but please know all were appreciated. Thanks to the Nipigon Hospital staff for the care during her stay. Thank you to Roseview direct care staff on Renaissance, also recreation, dietary, nursing, maintenance and management staff. Special thanks to Brenda, Shardae and Laurie for their care and support in Penny's last days. As per her wishes, no funeral will be held. A celebration of life is being planned for the fall. If desired, donations to an animal Charity of Your Choice would be appreciated.

I was so sorry to hear of Penny´s passing. She was my older cousin. I was a teenager in the 70´s when she visited our family farm in Alberta with a couple of her beautiful Great Pyrenees. I saw her again at Uncle Ken´s 90th birthday party. We had tried to get ahold of her again this spring. Now I know why we had no success. I remember her as a generous, energetic woman, and I know all of you who were close to her will miss her greatly. Thank you for being there for her when so many of us were so far away.

Penny was a mentor to many "stray" kids. Glad to have had that experience as an adolescent. Penny will be remembered fondly. RIP.

Penny was an amazing history teacher when I had her at Nip-Rock High and loved spending time talking with her near my time of graduation. I had both Penny and Doug and they were great people. Sending my condolences to the family at this time of loss.

In 1985 Penny would pick me up for the grade 13 history class she taught at night and i really got a chance to get to know her. Did you know she was a model in her youth? She had a remarkable wit and intelligence and she saw that in me. I can never thank her enough.

Condolences to all family and friends. She will be sadly missed. One of my teachers that most influenced me. They loved their dog kennel business and went over and above for us all. RIP Mrs. Numbers.

One of the kindest, most intelligent and caring women I´ve ever had the pleasure and privilege to know. Her and Doug were neighbours and friends to generations of my family. She had such a wealth of knowledge and incredible memory, yet so gentle and patient, making her the best teacher I´ve ever had. I will never forget the pride in her eyes when I´d passed a Conservatory exam. She was so incredibly talented and played the piano so beautifully. I will cherish every memory of her.

So sorry to hear of Penny´s passing. She was an awesome person and had the biggest heart. She looked after my two dogs in her kennel for 2 hears when I was teaching down South at the Police college and cared for them like they were her own.
My mother Margaret also sends her condolences. Penny and Margaret had a special relationship when Penny needed someone to take dogs that were rescued from other owners. I think my mom took 5 or 6 dogs for Penny and they remained friends for many years.
Sending condolences to her extended family.
