Our dearest Peter Lawlor Houge died March 18th with family at his side, at the age of 91. He will be deeply missed.
Born in Hawkesbury, Ontario, Peter moved to Thunder Bay at the age of 18 to study forestry. He worked with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Great Lakes Forest Products in cruising and fire protection until retirement.
Peter loved nature, animals and the great outdoors. Canoeing, fishing, and listening to the wind in the pines at his cottage on Shebandowan were his favourite pastimes.
He was active with the Nancy Greene Ski League at Loch Lomond in the 1970s and 80s. He ran with the 100 Mile Club at the YMCA, golfed at the Fort William Country Club, and was a familiar face at the College Fitness Centre for over 40 years, as well as enjoying the fellowship of the Masonic Order.
In later years, Peter underwent long-term dialysis, but he didn't let it hold him back. He lived in the present, took one day at a time, and appreciated good friends, a cup of coffee, and the latest stock market news.
The family wishes to say a special thank you to the Home Hemodialysis team at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, and to the many healthcare professionals who supported him over the past 12 years, special tribute to his nurse Lori Lachimea and Lauri-Ann Vester.
Peter shared his life with Johan Houge. He is survived by his children Douglas Houge and Cynthia Jayne Kristensen and son-in-law Ole Kristensen. His grandchildren are Magnus Houge Kristensen, William Kristensen, John Houge and great-grandson Ozzy.
A memorial service is planned for the summer, with details to follow.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
