I was just thinking about Peter Suffak today as we plan for the 50th Anniversary of the Thunder Bay Multicultural Association and Folklore Festival (2023), and all the hard work and smiles he shared so immigrants would feel welcome in Thunder Bay. Not only was he a hard worker and amazing man, but he always stood up for what he believed in and helped many in the most kind ways. My father and Peter were friends, both working at the CPR (Andrew Gall), and we grew up knowing Peter and Mary who went to St. Peter's Church as my family did. Peter worked hard and with pride for the Royal Canadian Slovak Legion and so many other Slovak groups. Folklore Festival for many of the early years would not have been the success it was and has become if not for the friendly smile, and hard work, of Peter who never looked for credit for all that he did with support from his lovely wife Mary. As a Charter member of TBMA, he had a vision. Peter, your efforts have made TBMA and Folklore Festival well-known in this community and Region. Folklore, a place where people stand side by side and celebrate the rich cultural diversity of Canada, with smiles having fun and seeing the value of everyone as they participate together, is part of your legacy and we thank you. Most of all, I remember Peter's smile and gentle manner combined with his determination. Few men of his calibre cross our paths. Thank you to Mary and the family for sharing him with us. I was so sorry to hear about Peter’s passing. What a wonderful legacy he leaves behind. He did so much for the Slovak community. I will forever be grateful to Peter for his helping my father get his licence at 82 by translating the written test for him. He truly was a lovely man who didn’t waste a minute of his life. He will be missed. My prayers are with you.
