The family of Peter Woit is saddened to announce the passing of a great storyteller, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 with his loving wife of 70 years at his side. Peter was born on October 29, 1917 to Frank and Teresa Woit on Stapleton Street in Westfort. He attended St. Martin's School and was one of only a few to continue his education at Selkirk Vocational Institute. After a brief but exciting adventure sailing on the Great Lakes and logging in the Slate Islands for the Pigeon Logging Company, he began a long and dedicated career with Canada Car. He started as a Tool and Die maker working his way up the ladder retiring in 1982 after 43 years of service as the Superintendent of Quality Control. In retirement, his analytical skills and abilities were recognized by a U.S. based Company and he was hired to ensure the quality of subway cars that were purchased from Canada Car. He continued to work on contract for another 10 years, laughing all the way to the bank, as he couldn't believe someone would actually pay him for a job he enjoyed so much. Until recently, he faithfully attended the Canada Car retirees' meetings. Dad was one of the original members of the Westfort Credit Union and was elected to the Board of Directors. He continued in various roles for a 40 year period and is fondly remembered by this organization as a calming influence and a dedicated, committed volunteer. Dad also had a passion for politics and was a member of the CCF Party, later the NDP and a great admirer of Tommy Douglas. Dad loved gardening and his backyard garden was the envy of the neighbourhood. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage and could be seen at various locations around the city, with his card partner Anne, challenging the best players around. Dad met the love of his life, Anne Bobbie while both were employed at Canada Car. They were married on February 9, 1943 and raised 4 children, eventually moving to Empire Avenue where they have resided ever since. Dad is survived by his wife Anne, children Judy (Tim) McCormack, Raymond, Barry (Marsha) and Ron (Barbara); grandchildren Melissa, Ryan, Meghan, Kevin Christopher and Cassandra; great grandchildren Irelan, MacKenzie, Gabrielle, Isabella, Bronwyn, Piper, Maddox, Cooper, Carter and his brother Benny (Julie) . He was predeceased by a son in infancy, his parents Frank and Teresa, his siblings Mary, Julie, John, Theresa, Louis, Helen, Edna and Annabelle. He was a kind and gentle man who was loved and respected by his co-workers, friends and his family. He will be dearly missed. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 23 at 6pm with prayers to follow at 7 pm in the Blake Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Monday, September 24 at St. Elizabeth's Church, 766 Sprague Street with internment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in Peter's memory may be made to Hospice Northwest or a charity of your choice. A tree will be planted in memory of Peter Woit in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday, June 9, 2013. On-line Condolencesmay be sent
