PIROSKA GOLPHY Obituary

May 22, 1957 ~ February 2, 2026
Piroska would read the obituaries every day with her coffee and mention how the birthdates were getting closer to hers. Still, she would be surprised to see her name come up so quickly.

Piroska Golphy, 68, passed away at St. Joseph's Care Group 2 North on February 2, 2026 surrounded by family.

Piroska was born in Fort William on May 22nd, 1957 shortly after her parents arrived from Hungary as refugees. She attended Selkirk High School until she ran away to Nipigon when she was 16. Piroska would often speak fondly of her time living in Nipigon in her late teens and 20s. Working at the Nipigon Café, Nipigon Inn Bar and for George at the taxi stand.

Piroska returned to Thunder Bay where she worked in housekeeping at Pinewood Court and Pioneer Ridge. She would get in trouble with nurses for befriending and becoming a friendly ear to residents while she cleaned their rooms. Later, Piroska made pies and worked in the kitchen at Gammondale Farm during Pumpkinfest. She also volunteered at the Community Clothing Assistance and the Friends of the Thunder Bay Library. Piroska prided herself in her garden and the hard work she put into it.

Piroska loved everything red, thrift shopping, visiting Vanderwees Greenhouses, crafting, reading, flowers, and anything Japanese culture. She loved her children more than anything.

Piroska is survived by her children Jutka (Ken), Aranka (Pat) and John. Her mother Elizabeth Fordos and sister Ildiko Fordos. Her grandchildren Elizabeth and Kenneth Austin. She was predeceased by her father Tibor Fordos, her daughter Ibolya, Newfie Lab Calcaneus and many aunties/uncles and cousins in Hungary.

Piroska was laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Valentine's Day, no service as per her request.

Thank you to the nurses, PSWs, and Helping Hands at St. Joe's 2 North, 3C at the Regional, and Renal. Your kindness and patience was very appreciated by Piroska as well as her family.

In lieu of flowers please donate to the Renal Department at the Thunder Bay Regional, Thunder Bay Humane Society and Teen Challenge Thrift Store.

Condolences to the family of Piroska. I went to Selkirk High School with her and I enjoyed being friends with her. She disappeared at one point and I just now found out where she went. Piroska was a joy to be around and I am very sorry to hear she has passed away.

Deepest sympathies to Aranka, Johnny and family, your mom was always such a treasure during your school days at Valley Central, whether she was helping Johnny in the coat room get ready for the outdoor recess in the winter or helping you both submit your exhibits for judging for the Lumberjack tea she would always be so very proud that her children participated to their very best, on occasion she was known to make a submission after the entires were closed but her true heart and love for her kids and their projects were always evident. I enjoyed time pent with her on the (SCA) she was always a ver eager participant when it came to raising funds for school activities, or picking you both up to take you to Gammondale. Your mom was always kind and generous and I hope that the many, many wonderful memories you shared together will help you during the days ahead. Mary Akis

I´ll never forget your Mom. Walking into the back at clothing assistance mountains and mountains of donations you´d see her sitting there among it. Training took all of a couple mins and got right to it. She was the boss back there and she created all the ways it ran so smoothly. She always had a smile on her face, kindest heart with the side of sassy. And her lemon meringue pies I´ll never forget when she called me to tell me to come over to pick it up. She was a true light in this world and knowing her, spending time with her always felt warm and like home Aranka & family, I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you today and always xoxo

I´m so sorry to hear of Piroska´s passing. I always enjoyed talking with her over the many years that I taught her lovely daughter music. It was very obvious that she loved her children very much and would turn herself inside out to do as much as possible for them. She had a green thumb and produced beautiful floral works of which I enjoyed her gift. Piroska was extremely proud of her Hungarian heritage and always helped people to pronounce Hungarian names. My sincere sympathy to her family for this great loss.
